The Stevan Method - (b)log

#1

Post by stevan » Sun Sep 30, 2018 11:53 am

As promised, after 17 days of no training, I'm starting a (b)log. Why (b)? Well, because I want a place to rant and make serious/semi-serious/troll-ish posts (thanks Ivan). The real purpose of these rants is to find flaws in them and to exploit the non-religious people that chose to participate.

6'1" 90kg 23. SSLP is the only significant part of my training history. Before I did some inconsistent bro work. After SSLP I did some sort of HLM, got injured, did the bridge, regressed. I lost a few pounds and tried to do SSLP with my modification - The Stevan Method, and I almost reached my SSLP numbers at a lower bodyweight before I had to take 17 days off. Those numbers are:
Squat 132.5x5
Bench 91.5x5
Press 57.5x5
Deadlift 137.5x5

Since I probably significantly detrained and lost a few pounds, I'll redo The Stevan Method.

Current training goal is to just train and not get distracted by the new ridiculously smart programmers.
Current training related nerdy goal is to get intimate with muscle physiology and signals that contract it. Hopefully I will find something interesting that will be challenging enough for a EE thesis. Any suggestions on this are more than welcome.

Definitely think that it won't be hard to find something challenging enough for that purpose. Sounds like a cool idea; would definitely read. Good luck with your training (*not shitposting...mostly).

Stevan, congrats on the log.

Just a suggestion -- I really like to track "sessions kept this year: x, missed this year y" in my log entries. Helps me with consistency, which used to be my biggest weak point as a lifter.

Thanks for the log! I subscribed, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out as you transition into early intermediate training. I think there's going to be a lot of good ideas coming out of you over the next year or two!

One of us! One of us! Gooble Gobble, one of us!
Welcome to the cult!
Not letting yourself get distracted by different program options is tricky- but now you have a log to hold yourself accountable.

Second this! So many metrics can be tracked that may or may not have value as actual data... but finding psychologically meaningful things to track, especially compliance related, can be such a valuable addition.

Repeat the same weight and then add 5lbs every year. Preferably after Christmas to gain mass empowered by Christ. This is the weird trick for extending your linear progression, not resetting by 10%.

Ah excellent. I hear there's progress being made on neurologically controlled prosthetics, maybe that would be a fun + rewarding direction to take it?

Pretty detrained but not too bad
10/1/18
bw 90.9 kg, it's time to start eating

press 45x5x4
squat 100x5x2, some hip issues after 1st set, narrowed stance a bit, 2nd set was fine
db curls 14kg x forgot to count x 2
deadlift 110x5, 110x3, I wanted them to be very light, but they were just light, so I capped 2nd set at 3 reps

New gym, 2 eleiko bars and eleiko plates, other bars are complete garbage. There are 4x20kg plates and bunch of 15kg plates, I don't understand that. No power cage, just shitty squat racks. Benches are terrible, they have that shit in front for calves or leg extensions or whatever that is. Also, 2.5kg is the lowest possible increment. I will probably have to switch pressing programming soon.

Underfed, underslept, forgot to take caffeine, with new temp job where I did 5x more steps than usual the day before.
10/3/18
Bw 90.7

bench 75x5, 77.5x5x3, still getting used to the bench that feels like benching on pillows
squat 100x5, felt like shit and was in a hurry so I ditched 2nd set
chins 0x6x3 , I will try to LP these fuckers, 0 means no added weight

So I got a cold and missed training.
Inb4: what are you going to do, not train?
That's exactly what I'm going to do when water is dripping from my nose, I feel dizzy and due to being asthmatic, having a cold means something different for me.

So I will use this post for a first short blog post :D . I feel like a teenager again, having a blog'n'shit.

#1 4 Ways To Do More Volume For The Sake Of Doing More Volume
1. Start very submaximally and gradually build your way up. Example: start doing 7 sets of 5 with the bar, 3x/week and add weight.
2. Autoregulate your training and let your weights drop as a result of doing more volume. (after-peak stage excluded)
3. Use excessive amounts of different exercises for the same muscle group.
4. Use DUP.

What is your weekly volume, and what do you consider too much, or volume for the sake of it?
