Adam's Montana Log

#1

Post by adamv » Mon Nov 30, 2020 2:51 pm

I'm going to log my Montana Method run. At least I think it's the Montana Method, there seem to be a few different iterations. I'm running the version outlined in the 3 week general strength template Hanley put out there at the beginning of the year. I'm mostly logging it since it's so different from anything I've done before. If it's obvious I'm screwing it up feel free to let me know.

Stats: 185 / late 30s / like to say I'm 5'8" / not skinny

History:

Was introduced to strength training with Starting Strength in maybe 2014. Lifted that way through the end of 2016 with intermittent success. I never figured out how to make reliable progress after the early intermediate stage. Worked with a coach online near the end, which helped some.

Took a few years off and started back up in June of 2020 after selling off half of my home gym. I ran an LP from June to August, and an 8/6/3 10-day rotation from August to November. When I look at the MM template it seems like a logical extension of what I've done, we'll see. The lack of intensity is unnerving.

The last 6 months went something like this:
Day 1end LPend 8/6/3
Dead250 x5380 x5415 x6
Squat225 x5335 x5370 x3
Bench185 x5245 x5280 x5
Press135 x5165 x5185 x5

I really dislike squatting. I only do what I have to, almost always beltless.

Tested singles before Thanksgiving. 1RMs for are currently 465/405/315/210, most of which are at or near PRs.

Squat: 355 x1 ; 285 7 sets of 3

* squat single was after the triples
* 2-3 minutes rest between sets, nothing felt too difficult

Week 1 in the books. Work capacity wise the week has been more challenging then I expected, hopefully that will translate later.

Might add something tricep focused Saturday.

Yeah, I'm sure that's part of it.

C1W2D1 - Monday 12/7

Squat: 325 7 sets of 3
Bench: 285 x1 ; 260 6 sets of 3
Chins: all of them

A little soreness on the bench sets. Nothing terrible, but I'm surprised it carried over from last week. Never done a multi-week program before though, maybe that's by design.

C1W2D2 - Tuesday

Dead: 370 6 sets of 3
Bench: 220 6 sets of 6
Incline: 155 6 sets AMRAP 12 -> 8
Curls

Nice to add a little variety to comp movements

C1W2D3 - Thursday

Squat: 355 x1 ; 265 5 sets of 8
Slingshot: 280 x2 ; 300 x2 ; 330 x1; 280 ~14 reps
Press: 195 x1 ; 165 ~20 reps
Chins: +45 in sets of 6

* went light on the squats, mostly because I didn't want to go heavier
* moved up the press from Friday for time, I was pretty tired at that point

My start leaves a lot to be desired ...

* not really trying on the squats
* lifetime PR on the bench, +15lbs from 3 weeks ago, guess that's why I'm so sore

C1W3D4 - Friday

Press: 215 xf ; 175 6x3
Dead: 485 xf; 375 1x8

* One run of MM in the books. Happy with a big bench PR, disappointed in press and dead progress. Not shocked on the press, but I need to think about the DL a bit

Going to run this one more time, basically like the first run with a few minor adjustments on the pulls.

C2W1D1 - Monday

Squat: 365 x1 ; 290 16 reps
Bench: 255 21 reps in triples
Chins

C2W1D2 - Tuesday

DL: 425 x1 ; 335 48 reps
Bench: 215 6 sets of 8
Incline: 160 5 sets AMRAP@8 (mostly 10s)
Curls

* Doubled the pull volume from the template. My work capcity is not high, but that was the most challenging thing I've done in recent memory.

C2W1D3 - Thursday

Squat: 315 3x5
Bench: 300 x1 ; 280 x3, x3 ; 250 18 reps
Chins/curls

* Back offs were heavy, until I realized I miss-read the program. Oh well

* tried some bw dips for the first time in years. I know conceptually they're light, but novel range of motion wise they were rough

missed several logs, although mostly just punching the clock waiting for some PR attempts at the end of the week

C2W2D4 - Thursday

Squat: 360 x1 ; 270 4x8
Press: 170 7x3 ; 200 xf
Bench: 230 7x6
Curls

* just too much fatigue for heavy pressing today, didn't help that I moved the single to the end for time

C2W2D5 - Friday

Dead: 430 x1 ; 385 5x4
Press: 140 4x10
Dips: 55 3x5

* cut a couple of sets off of the DL volume, again feeling pretty beat up

Week 3

C2W3D1 - Monday

Squat: 355 5x3
Bench: 275 7x2
Chins

C2W3D2 - Tuesday

Dead: 375 4x2
Bench: 225 5x6
Incline: 170 5xAMRAP
Curls

* starting to feel a little fresher at this point, hopefully that's a good sign
