Login Spelling

#1

Post by quikky » Mon Oct 08, 2018 5:55 pm

This is a minor pet peeve of mine that I see on many web pages. The site has two buttons on the right site: Register and Login. Register is a verb defining the act of registering. Login should really be "Log In", as in, the act of logging in to the Exodus forum.

Just change Register to Registration; that way it'll be nouns all around. Can't believe I loginned just to type that!

login: a place on a screen that you click (= press) in order to start using a computer system

write a site that uses "log in". https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dic ... lish/login

What does that yellow button on that site say?

A noun describing an action is still a noun. As JimRiley said, you don't say you "loginned" to Exodus. Just like after I click "Logout", I wouldn't have "Logoutted".

Quark, are you offended by my spelling suggestion?

Seems like spelling is a touchy subject around here.

Offended, no. My main interest in this sort of issue is clarity. I can't see anyone being confused by either "login" or "log in" on a forum.

I did consider it odd that you asked a question that I had answered in the post you quoted.

I get clarity. However, spelling matters, at least to some. It's like if the site said "Plaese raed teh ruels befroe postnig".

I don't know what you meant by me answering a question in your quote. Did you mean that the Cambridge site uses "Log In" and that was an example? If so, you should have written it with a colon, like: "write a site that uses "log in": https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dic ... lish/login". ;)

But hey, not a hill for me to die on. Spell as you wish.

Anyone else confused by these quikky/quark conversations? Your names are too similar.. as far as I'm concerned quarkky is in a room talking to himself.

One may have Loggins'd to pooh corner or the danger zone, however.
