Re: The Gaming Thread
Klei has been slowly updating Griftlands, quietly working towards 1.0 release. I really like the game, hadn't played it since mid 2020 and just reinstalled it.

Ok. I caved. I liquidated every GPU I could possible find on eBay. And pretty much every other scrap of computer I had laying around too. The used market right now is absolutely crazy.

Re: The Gaming Thread
Bump.
How do you guys feel about gaming on a laptop? I've never really done it.
I have a desktop PC but my GPU died a while ago, and I just am not willing to buy a new one at current prices. I also play old games, usually 3-5 years old.
I guess my question is, (1) how much for a laptop that's good enough to run last-gen PC games, (2) would I enjoy it or is just annoying compared to a desktop?

I looked around my whole house and even out in the garden. I could only find the RX 480 in my PC.

I bought a Dell G5 a couple of years ago, has a RTX2070 in it. I use it basically like a console, have a wireless keyboard and mouse (the corsair keyboard that's in a lap desk thingie, it's great). Hook it up to either of my TVs. Sometimes use my Switch ProController with it.dw wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 4:28 pm Bump.

It's great. Haven't turned on my PS4 in probably 5 years.
They are loud, however. Those fans get going and push a lot of air.

Check the wood pile out back. That's where I found my 750ti.neandrewthal wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 4:55 pm I looked around my whole house and even out in the garden. I could only find the RX 480 in my PC.
More seriously, I built a couple of gaming computers for the teenagers a few years before the Great Chip Shortage of 2020/2021. Back when you could pick up a used 1060 for < $100 on eBay.
It's nice. Like @SquatsALot said, they have loud fans. And they really aren't mobile. If you aren't plugged in, you aren't going to be gaming for very long. And they get hot.
My son picked up a Lenovo Legion 5 with an AMD 4800h and a 1660ti for college for something like $800 refurbished. It's a very nice laptop...and not just for gaming. I'm quite jealous.

My desktop died a few months ago too. I now game on a Dell G15 and tbf it's pretty solid for running the games I like.

I convinced my work that we needed a AMD threadripper computer. I get to build it. So excited. Suckers.

Re: The Gaming Thread
Bought Borderlands 3 since it went cross platform to play with my brother. One session in and he seems to hate it, which I probably should have guessed since Gears 5 was too complicated for him, but he suggested this one. 0/3 so far on any game that requires more than two buttons, lol

Re: The Gaming Thread
I loved BL2 and 3 so much I recently bought the first one to play just for the character lore (which is super shallow and unnecessary, but it felt like an itch I had to scratch).Allentown wrote: ↑Sat Aug 28, 2021 7:02 am Bought Borderlands 3 since it went cross platform to play with my brother. Is it possible to boot macOS with a Ryzen G-series CPU as part of the hardware setup?

Re: The Gaming Thread
Fuck yeah.
I had to rein in my impulses a year ago when we did our first build. Figured my wife wouldn't believe me if I'd told her that the RGB fans cost less than the non-bling ones. Never even bothered to download the RGB software for the board.
But I just bought another case and am already leaning into flights of fancy. Would like to go for a less modest look this time around, and if I could load macOS with a dual-boot setup, that'd be swell. Though, from what I hear, I might only have until 2025 to enjoy this particular fantasy, assuming I can even pull it off with a non-Intel chip.

Re: The Gaming Thread
I was able to pick up an AMD Ryzen 9 5900x for $500. Which is way overkill but it was too good of a deal to pass up. They are gettable. Had to overpay for my GPU (3060 Ti) which made me sad but decided waiting until 2023 was a no go.Renascent wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:10 amBut I just bought another case and am already leaning into flights of fancy. That Ryzen 9... is that with a watercooling setup or fans?aurelius wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 11:39 amI was able to pick up an AMD Ryzen 9 5900x for $500. I'm trying to justify going with some sort of iGPU setup in the meantime. Not even looking for a 3000-series card (I don't intend to do much gaming, if at all), but even the lower-tiered cards have some nutty prices, from what I've seen.
Saw a 3000-series card the other day for something pandemic-reasonable (in the 700s, I think), but I didn't bite...

Liquid cooling. Surprisingly easy to install.Renascent wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 11:57 amThat Ryzen 9... is that with a watercooling setup or fans?

You can get a 3060 Ti for 700-800 pretty regularly. I picked one up off of Ebay after the last Best Buy resupply for $750. I game at 1440p so anything more than a 3070 series is overkill.
Newegg has a daily raffle where they sale graphics cards for MSRP.
