Yeah, it makes sense...not worth it though, IMO (shrugs)

Only three teams qualified the maximum number of 8 athletes (4m/4f): China, USA, and Japan.

Sure, it takes some money and resources to do all that, but some ability too ....

Did Japan actually have 8 athletes qualify, or were they gifted some slots for being the host country?

I fucked that up in what seems in a kinda racist way

China, USA, and KOREA qualified 8.

Japan 7 .... and IDK if some of those are host country slots.

I don't know if it does/ doesn't mean anything that USA got 8.

USA / Canada are basically the only two real 1st world countries in the Pan American region.
(sorry Brazil, Mexico, Argentina)
... and USA's population drawf all other countries over here.
So it may not be hard to do here.

You need some money to go to show up at all required these meets now ....
That's a lot of money whether its central-gov't, WL-federation, or completely private funds to support say 20-30 of athletes over a entire quad hoping 8 of that pool will get in.

The ROBI points thing does tie back to current WORLD Record lifts though .... so there's that.

Latin/South America had many sanctioned athletes.

I think there was some speculation on Weightlifting House that Japan declined their 8th spot since they do get another slot for hosting, and they could allow another country to make a decision before they pick their last athlete, depending on weight classes.

maltida's play by play on her Worlds performance

104-107-110x
Snatch warm ups were eh, but my opener and 107 felt GREAT on stage, which hasn’t happened since the first pan ams (rescheduled 2020) of the year. I was SO excited to feel a little like me again 🥺 107 was the most I’ve touched in comp or training since the Olympics, but I felt fairly confident in 110. Got REALLLLLL excited & rushed the shit out of it & gave myself a nice bonk on the head instead of a make. I don’t think I’ve ever missed a snatch like that before (let’s pls maybe not do it again either). Ended with a bronze in snatch, so I was pumped to medal, but knew I made my CJ day a little bit tougher if I wanted to fight for a higher total medal.

132x-132-136
CJ warm ups felt GOOD which is so rare for me. Usually @aimeeanayaeverett has to drag me through them. We opened at 132 instead of 130 because it gave me a better shot to battle for medals and I felt confident that I could make it. The dizzies felt otherwise, but I figured I had some sort of shot making the jerk rather than just dumping it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 132 second felt nice, although annoying because I was hoping for 38-40 for third to try to secure gold. Went to 136 on third to momentarily secure gold, which would have felt a lot better had I not turned into pudding in the clean, but IT BE LIKE THAT SOMETIMES. She was pretty gross, not gonna lie. Definitely a bit of a bummer to essentially have wasted a valuable CJ attempt because I think I could have fought hard for gold after 136. Ended up silver in CJ and silver in total by 1kg.

Not the best day, not the worst day, but A DAY & I’m proud of it regardless. Excited to improve on it in the coming months.

@mgil I believe she did at a training camp earlier this year she did, though don't remember for sure. I think she also Jerked 150 there and might be getting numbers confused.

ETA: She did 135 C&J and 140 Jerk at Tokyo training camp in March, another 135 C&J in June and 143 at Nationals in July:

As a 69 class, she was doing 105/130 on a semi-reg. basis...
Hitting 104/131 at 2017 WWC, and 106/133 at PanAms And was flirting with 107+/135+....all at 69.

Best that I can see was 112/140 at 2020(21) PanAms .... and what dam-man said 111/143 at USA Nats in '21 ...both as an 81.

Current Worlds she was back down at 76.

BodyWeight goes down lifts go down, and visa versa.

She'd make a helluva 87++.

Dunno if she needs to go to a higher weight class, rather I was hoping she’d put a bit more on C&J from going up to 81kg. She was pretty lean/lanky at 69kg.

Yeah, unfortunately I think the rate of weight gain needed for getting to 81 meant there wasn't as much muscle as she could've put on of it were a slower gain. The weight classes / Kate Nye really screwed her.

It’s kinda ironic that IWF and the IOC keep fucking around with weight classes but have such a hardon for PEDs. If someone’s gotta change weight classes (up or down) rapidly, then PEDs are obviously going to be a temptation to build mainly muscle if going up or retain mainly muscle going down.

No wonder this shit is going to sunset from the Olympics in 2028. Maybe they can survive fine without it. Not like NBC gives a shit about covering the sport anyhow.

...and add Alwine to that list (she's a 71 IIRC, but will likely go up).

Also

LOOK !
New weight classes!

I think Alwine won't cut below 71.

A bunch of USA girls will be vying for 71.01 to 81.00.

Mattie won't chunk-up to 81+ I'm sure.
If so , it'd be hard to qualify with all of the 81s, 87s, and 87+s in there.

That whole only-5-weight-classes thing is interesting to think about.
If that Robi point system stays in place ..... you are competing against a whole lot of other people now, just trying to qualify to get INTO the Olympics at all....your own country and outsiders. Let alone COMPETE (as in competitive) when you get there. I'm thinking its going to be a blood bath over next 4 2-1/2 years.

It’s certainly a good scheme to decimate the sport. The gap between the weight classes is far too wide.

Yeah they're all kinda fucked (basically everyone except the top in the new Olympic classes, no way is some likely to be competitive in a different class than their natural one).

Alwine is going to be a big force in the US though. She was doing great then I think got injured. Killing it now and I think still improving fairly rapidly. Her and Kate will be fun to watch. Mattie will be happier at 81 at least.

There's this new basic-B who is kicking everyone's ass lately .... Olivia Reeves the new bright shiny thing.

RIP martha

For a point of reference, martha wasn't even getting over 105/127 as a 69kg
I think martha is only doing 112/135 or something at her current class of 76/81/87 or whatever the hell she's in.

Olivia is making 118/150 look almost easy .... well, at it looks like there's more kilos to be had for sure .... at 71kg class

I think Reeves is/might be outlifting all of the current SHW women (and most other countries too).

Vibert went out with bang.

"Vibert set a personal snatch record, broke the American 81 kg C&J record, tied the 81 kg total American record, and moved into sixth in the 81 kg Olympic Qualifying Rankings with the performance, but despite the heroic effort, she couldn’t jump into the top-3 amongst U.S. lifters and ended her quad as a top-10-ranked athlete in two weight classes (71 kg & 81 kg)." Its kind of funny how the qualifying works these days.
Martha got pushed way up in weight classes due to Vibert/Nye.....and then the re-hashing of the olympic weight classes
Then Reeves comes out of nowhere as a 71 as well. Pushing them both out ...
