I'm pretty sure the number was 30, but it was pretty well correlated to significantly decreased all cause mortality. I like to think that was controlled for age, but who knows.
Regardless, 30 isn't a big number.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I assume that it’s the ability to do the 30 push ups that correlates with decreased mortality, not the doing of them. Assuming that, no harm in progressing them in a manner other than total reps. I agree that 30 reps isn’t a crazy amount, but I get suspicious of the form on anything in that range.
I like where you're going with that. Maybe to my detriment. I CAN do them, I just hate pushups and so do my elbows.

No, that's right. But I'm likewise just as suspicious of anyone who does a set of 15 and says "that was easy, I can totally do 30, I'm good." I wasn't very clear in my post, either- work on getting BW in check, and strength and cardio up to doing a 30 rep set of push ups and a 10 rep set of pull ups. If weight loss and health is the goal, I think those are some fine goalposts along the way.

It was 40 push-ups, not 30, and they're harder than you're thinking because they have to be done in sync with an 80 bpm metronome, two beeps per push-up, one down, one up. You can't bang out fast reps, nor can you rest.

Actually, that’s where I was going - it’s not a crazy number, but I do think that it’s hard if not cheated, whether by straying from the criteria in the study that caught your eye, or just standard shitty humping the floor. I’ve never met a person who claimed to do sets of really high rep pushups whose form wasn’t total trash.

Major health organizations recommend *at least* 150-300 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75-150 minutes of vigorous exercise. Going beyond the upper end confers additional health benefits.
I do remember the SBS guys doing a segment on this. Either it was in the last few months or that is when I listened to it. Their take from the studies was that the majority of health benefits are gained at the low end of time commitment exercising and the health benefits/time exercising relationship was not linear.

You're right. A 20% reduction in mortality risk occurs with just 50 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week. There's a nice chart showing the dose-response curve in the Scientific Report backing the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines. See page D-10.

That’s interesting.

I noticed my elbows and shoulders are not happy if I stop doing push ups and curls.

I am forced into a tucked elbow position for them. I am not adverse to pain, but there is no special victory in it for me so it's not worth it. Even with tucked elbows the shoulders and elbows get a little pissed off after 15 or so. I can knock out more with the elbows out, but there's nothing in it for me to entice me to endure the pain and possible tendonitis.
