I've had these sexual exertion headaches (I don't get them with any other sort of exertion). First one came on during a particularly intense orgasm at age 17. I think I forgot to breathe. I thought I was having a stroke.

I've had a few more in the 28 years since, but they're super rare.

In my case, I'm pretty sure the issue was/is 1) inner ear inflammation + 2) a hyper-specific sexual exertion* + 3) not breathing

*it's only happened when I've tried to "rush" the orgasm rather than letting it happen. Super hard to explain.

I get it!!

I made the mistake of holding my breath during orgasm once years ago, and I had a weird headache afterwards.

I can feel some tightness in my upper neck/lower head muscles if I try to quickly or forcibly extend my cervical spine, which jives with the muscle strain theory I think. If I stay relaxed during sex, I don’t have any problems now.

I’m more and more convinced that I just did this to myself by straining too much during that last deadlift session.

12/5/22 Monday [Training 129] [math]2^3[/math]

AMBW & Umbilicus (7-day)
188.4 & 34.82

DB Bench
60's x 8 x 4

Pendlay Row
135 x 8 x 3

Lat Pulldown
Slow Eccentric
143 x 8 x 3

JM Press
75 x 8 x 3

Cable Crunch
77 x 10,10
72 x 10

Leg Press

Y Raises
Cable
20 x 10 x 3

Barbell Curl
65 x 8 x 3

Leg Curl
125 x 8 x 3

Session Length
1:22

Notes
Good session. Doing the ab work before leg press was kinda funny--it made it a little difficult to get up since my abs were fatigued.

With the leg curl, I didn't prop myself up on the pads/handles that are made for that. I laid flat on the torso pad, holding onto the frame of the machine during the sets, which made it harder.

If you didn't see this thread asking for feedback on my JM press, please go there and make fun of me.

Alek tries to JM Press.

Grippin It
(L,R) x sets:
(T x 8; 0.5 x 8) x 4

[Conditioning]

Peloton
9.7 miles in 30 minutes

I got new shoes.

They finally got me; if it wasn't for those pesky miniature biological warfare weapons (Thanks for that one, @SeanHerbison. I use it all the time.)...

My flu symptoms are mild to just a bit worse than mild right now--I've got a very occasional cough and mild body aches with intermittent chills. No fever so far. A little lethargy, too. Advil and Mucinex to the rescue!!

I'm not going to the gym today although I may to do some stuff at home. We'll see. I'm hoping it doesn't progress much further than this and is outta here quickly. I'm trying to eat at maintenance, but I'm still losing weight at roughly the same pace.

I otherwise feel good and strong though.

Dear Diary

#1309

Post by alek » Mon Dec 12, 2022 12:17 pm

Dear Diary,

Well. Fuck that.

That shit got pretty gnarly there for a while. Wednesday night, I couldn't take loud noises, and had to curl up in a ball by myself, whimpering my way to sleep. I kept taking a bunch of advil and mucinex to keep the symptoms as bay, but I was in rough shape for a few days. Felt all right when I woke up on Saturday morning until we got breakfast; a few minutes after finishing the meal, I got some pretty bad stomach pain. No nausea or vomiting, just pain. It didn't travel down into my intestines--just in my stomach.

Didn't really eat much the rest of the day. Had some pretty bad stomach pain all night that night that interfered with my sleep, but I was sure that I had an NSAID/alcohol induced gastritis going on--I had eaten a shit ton of advil/aleve over the past couple weeks because of the exertion headaches and now flu, plus I was drinking a beer everyday from a beer advent calendar (Thank you again, Aldi!). Turns out even just a little bit of alcohol will worsen gastritis caused by NSAID use. Well. Fuck me. Let's bring back those flu symptoms!!

My wife bought some antacids for me on Sunday, and I took those after eating food, which helped with the pain. I haven't had any advil since early Saturday morning, nor have I had any mucinex since Sunday morning. The gastritis seems to be gone.

I feel okay right now, but who knows what I'll feel like tomorrow. The only real symptom I have right now is chest congestion, which seems to be helped by spending 10 to 15 minutes in a hot shower. I can force cough some of it up, which brings a bit of relief. But shit, give me the flu over that gastritis crap. Nope, don't want to do that again. That shit hurt--not just pain, but hurt.

I carried a pow pow power wheels out from walmart to my car about an hour ago, and I was pretty badly winded from that 200 feet walk with the box. Oh boy. I couldn't imagine doing some cardio deadlifts right now.

I also got called a robot by a fucking robot a couple days ago. I tried to submit a help ticket to IT through their portal, and the damn thing spits back at me, "You look like a robot. Bye." Fuck you, asshole! Apparently you can't use proper fucking grammar in communication nowadays.

Training... ain't been no training. I want to get on the exercise bike later, but... we'll see.

I've also gained a pound or so despite essentially not eating for 3 days--that stomach pain thing. I'm supposed to go to maintenance starting in January. If today is essentially it of this flu, then I may start training/dieting again on Wednesday.

The one bright spot is I had one of my best quips the other day. In a moment of lucidity, I was talking to a buddy of mine and his girlfriend. She and I were trying to figure out when exactly we had met, but we couldn't nail it down. So she says something like, "Oh that must have been one of the other girlfriends," to which I immediately respond, "Well, at least they're all named Bridgette, so that doesn't trip me up." Her name is not really Bridgette, but you get the idea... Everyone had a good laugh.

Anyway.

Fuck the Flu!

I've come to terms with the realization that I'm about 60% a small child in an adult's body, with the rest a mix of responsible adult, angsty teenager, and dirty old man.

My wife has a hard time coping sometimes.

Yes, yes she did.

I still haven't been able to string two good days in a row together. Although, the only remaining symptom I have--right now, anyway--is a mostly dry cough due to some lingering chest congestion. I can still hear it rattling around in there, and it's constantly tickling my cough reflex.

At this exact moment in time, I feel okay, and I may get in the gym to move some light weights around. We'll see how I feel in an hour or so. The thought of cardio is somewhat nauseating, but I should probably do some to loosen some of the phlegm in my chest.

My wife has brought home a pretty nasty sinus infection, and it's still possible she may have flu-like symptoms again. We're supposed to travel soon for the holiday, but the temperature there won't be above freezing for at least 5 days straight starting on Tuesday. It could be longer since that's as far out as I can see on the forecast; it was about 70 here yesterday. Yes, I know the cold doesn't cause illness; germs do, but, I'm not looking forward to the stress of the cold on our immune systems right now. I wouldn't be unhappy if we just stayed home this year.

For your not-health.

Yeah I’m gonna do these with a trap bar - volume deadlifts end up tearing up my shins

How long did you need to recover cardio wise? Was it like a 30-40 effort?

It actually wasn't that bad. I thought it would get kinda sucky, but there never seemed to be any doubt that I could do it. Strength-wise, it was easy; I thought about doing RDLs, which helped with technique since that was essentially the first time I've ever done TnG deadlifts.

The cardio part wasn't too bad either. I remember thinking, "Damn, is this over yet?", but recovery was pretty quick.
Was it like a 30-40 effort?
Does this mean could I have done 30 or 40 reps? If yes, then maybe. I really didn't feel it in my usual deadlift muscles, and I imagine other things would give out before the hammies, glutes, and back.

Ah. No, not 30-40 seconds, but probably around 60 seconds--maybe just a few more. Almost all the reps were a "normal" pace of breath at top, eccentric, light touch, concentric, repeat, which was probably 3 seconds per rep. Around rep 15, I took a few breaths at the top and did 3 more reps. Another couple breaths for the last 2 reps.

...yeah, so probably 65 to 70 seconds in total.

I think I'll try 200 x 20 on Monday, which I'll record.
