Latest SS article

The quote below stuck out at me
"Coach Carter told me that while I would become better at lifting on my own, I would continue to need coaching and programming from an SSC indefinitely."

The article reads (to me):
Talk, inquire, or speculate out-loud about opening a SSFG? and they'll let you publish a nice blurb on the org's main site.
The picture of the dude is telling.
Doing rack pulls with 315 with straps and belted.

"I know that I need to go to a SS gym for the rest of my life. I will not carry on training on my own – I know myself too well."
Let's see, 56yo male in Texas could purchase a single premium immediate annuity that would pay $315/mo for the rest of his life for $56,655. That's one way to calculate the cost of what SS has talked him into.

"being fat and strong is far better than being fat and weak."
Seems like an important option is missing here.

Not gonna bag on this dude too much since he’s lifting and has reasonable numbers.
But yeah, they are so one dimensional in terms of training.

Re: Latest SS article
"I play pickleball with several of my fellow lifters. One of my classmates was cast for a part in a local production of Little Women, and about a dozen people from the gym got together for dinner before the play and then went to see our pal restart his acting career. The gym also does group activities. We went axe throwing together; we met at a local brewery for food and beer; we had a Field Day on the ranch of one of the lifters where we competed in strength related activities before eating some of Brent Carter’s famous smoked brisket. A Starting Strength Gym is unlike any other gym on the planet."
Interesting, I was just working on an article for the SS website delving into the biomechanical aspects of how pickleball, axe throwing, and theater all eat into your lifting recovery and why you shouldn't be doing it.

To be the voice of dissent (and not a fan of SS), I don't think the membership cost is necessarily unreasonable
I live in a medium/largeish sized metro, probably similar to where that guy lives. Maybe it's just my metro, but any gym I know of around here is so crowded some of them are, by my standards, unusable for a serious lifter. I'm talking about violating fire marshal rules, you can't even see the dang wall on the other side of the building because the swarms of people are that dense. Forget about getting to use the equipment you want to use, ain't happening. There are some "luxury" gyms like equinox/lifetime that cost around that amount, they're crowded too, but not as much.
If that cost gives you reliable access to the equipment you need, that seems to just be the market rate
I have a home gym, but there's a real estate cost to that, likely being in the tens of thousands of dollars if I were to calculate it

To go back to y'alls side, that 315/mo likely isn't static; it'll move along with inflation. If you add a 2 or 3 percent yearly increase, the NPV will be quite a bit higher than 56,655Culican wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 8:55 am "I know that I need to go to a SS gym for the rest of my life. Re: Latest SS article
To be fair (I think he said this in the article/interview ...but I'm not going back to read that POS writeup), he just lifts there now. He may not be paying for the scheduled slot time and full blown coaching. He's probably only paying $275 a month now.SaviorSelf wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 7:52 pmTo go back to y'alls side, that 315/mo likely isn't static; it'll move along with inflation. EDIT: nope he's clear about happily paying several hundred dollars a month for 5 years now; still gets "coaching".
What a time to be alive.

Re: Latest SS article
Allow me
so five years in, here what his training looks like?
"My current schedule has changed from three lifts a day to just two. I do a heavy single, with back offs, for each of the four main lifts once every two weeks. I would never have made the progress I have made at SSD on my own."
"If you are new to strength training, one of the most important aspects of it that may not be obvious to you is how much resting goes on between work sets. Often it is five minutes or more. So most of the time during the class you are resting, and naturally the lifters and the coaches talk to one another. We have covered all the subjects that polite society would expect us to, and quite a few subjects that would make the average person blush."
That dude is fat, needs to do something a little more challenging and cardio-esque.
I suppose the blushing-topics are about ball-bearings and weightlifting belts

Haha, yeah, that's a great quote! It's so true, though. Even when we think we've got it down, there's always room for improvement and a good coach can help us reach new heights. I've found that having a solid program and guidance from an SSC has made all the difference in my own lifting journey.
