Bands, chains, wraps, straps, racks... are you sure this is training related?

I do want dumbbells. I have a pair of adjustable handles that use my oly plates, I use them 3-5 times a week. It would be really nice to have a more permanent solution that has more convenient setup and comfortable use- no sleeves sticking way out, for example.

Backstory being that I made a bet that might get me $2k to use on gym equipment. Adjustable DB and an adjustable bench are on the list of what I would use that money on.
In that case I would go with the Reppins for sure (I preordered them myself). To me the adjustment speed is worth an extra $300 for a piece of equipment that you’ll use multiple times per week or even per workout for decades. Makes warming up, supersetting, etc much quicker and more convenient which in turn allows you to get your workouts done faster, saving you time. And as we all know, time is money, so really when you think about it, you can’t afford *not* to get the Reppins… DO IT, GET THE REPPINS
Genius!!!!!

I have the Ironmasters. They’re awesome.
I also pre-ordered the Reppins.
It’s not difficult to change weight on IMs, but it would definitely be nicer to have the Reppin mechanism.

Do you really want dumbbells?

You can do almost everything with just a barbell and a chin up bar.
Likewise: You can do almost everything with a pair of adjustable DBs, a bench, and a chin-up bar ;)

To my way of thinking: The absolutely most economical home gym would be exactly that.

I've a set of the original Hoist/IronMaster adjustable DBs. They work well, but...
  • You have to be very, very careful to get them properly secured. If one plate falls out, they all fall out. Not fun, I can assure you.
  • They take a loooong time to do weight changes.
  • They go up to only 45 lbs.
I also have an Olympic plate DB handle. Quicker change, but more bulky. I thought about adding a 2nd handle for when I outgrow my Hoist/IM DBs, but I'd have to buy a bunch more plates and more plate storage.

So I'm thinking the 85 lb. set of "Reppin" adjustable DBs may be the way to go. I really can't see myself ever needing more than that.

Only question is: I wonder if they'd work with my Mad Spotter DB Hooks?

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I would be extremely surprised if they didn't work. I've seen them used even with Powerblocks, which are much more enclosed than the Reppins.

Can you squat heavy with dumbbells?
Goblet squats are a MF at some point, but a different sensation.

That said, you can do some stuff with DB that you can’t do with barbells, like butterflies, single arm stuff.!And def better for step ups.
