Genius!!!!!TimK wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 5:46 amIn that case I would go with the Reppins for sure (I preordered them myself). To me the adjustment speed is worth an extra $300 for a piece of equipment that you’ll use multiple times per week or even per workout for decades. Makes warming up, supersetting, etc much quicker and more convenient which in turn allows you to get your workouts done faster, saving you time. And as we all know, time is money, so really when you think about it, you can’t afford *not* to get the Reppins… DO IT, GET THE REPPINSAllentown wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 3:16 am Comparing them to the Ironmasters specifically.
I do want dumbbells. I have a pair of adjustable handles that use my oly plates, I use them 3-5 times a week. It would be really nice to have a more permanent solution that has more convenient setup and comfortable use- no sleeves sticking way out, for example.
Backstory being that I made a bet that might get me $2k to use on gym equipment. Adjustable DB and an adjustable bench are on the list of what I would use that money on.

I have the Ironmasters. They’re awesome.Allentown wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 3:16 am Comparing them to the Ironmasters specifically.

I also pre-ordered the Reppins.
It’s not difficult to change weight on IMs, but it would definitely be nicer to have the Reppin mechanism.

Likewise: You can do almost everything with a pair of adjustable DBs, a bench, and a chin-up bar

To my way of thinking: The absolutely most economical home gym would be exactly that.
I've a set of the original Hoist/IronMaster adjustable DBs. They work well, but...
- You have to be very, very careful to get them properly secured. If one plate falls out, they all fall out. Not fun, I can assure you.
- They take a loooong time to do weight changes.
- They go up to only 45 lbs.
So I'm thinking the 85 lb. set of "Reppin" adjustable DBs may be the way to go. I really can't see myself ever needing more than that.
Only question is: I wonder if they'd work with my Mad Spotter DB Hooks?

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I would be extremely surprised if they didn't work. I've seen them used even with Powerblocks, which are much more enclosed than the Reppins.Michiganian wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 8:24 amOnly question is: I wonder if they'd work with my Mad Spotter DB Hooks?

Can you squat heavy with dumbbells?Michiganian wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 8:24 amLikewise: You can do almost everything with a pair of adjustable DBs, a bench, and a chin-up bar

I've a set of the original Hoist/IronMaster adjustable DBs. They work well, but...I also have an Olympic plate DB handle. Quicker change, but more bulky. I thought about adding a 2nd handle for when I outgrow my Hoist/IM DBs, but I'd have to buy a bunch more plates and more plate storage.

Goblet squats are a MF at some point, but a different sensation.
That said, you can do some stuff with DB that you can’t do with barbells, like butterflies, single arm stuff.!And def better for step ups.

Thanks for the heads up on the review, @Clearwater47.
At $1k for an 85 lb. starting pair: More than I'd care to spend, but, they definitely look like the way to go. REP's QuickDraw adjustable DBs are also nice, but top-out at 60 lbs. Not enough over my current 45 lb. adjustable Hoist/IronMaster DBs to make them worthwhile.

Yeah, I think the biggest benefit is the higher weight capacity. It's probably not worth the cost is that higher weight isn't needed.Michiganian wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 9:05 am Thanks for the heads up on the review, @Clearwater47.

Just used the Rep Pepins for the first time. I’m a fan. Dont regret buying them.
I love my Iron Masters, but being able to instantly change weights is indescribably nice.

If I ever manage to outgrow my Hoist/IronMaster DBs, which top out at 45 lbs., that's the way I'd go, though.Clearwater47 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 10:14 amYeah, I think the biggest benefit is the higher weight capacity. And, besides the weight increase, that's the reason why.

When you go really heavy, over 100lb, the ironmasters are smaller than the Pepins, which I prefer.Michiganian wrote: ↑Tue Mar 04, 2025 7:40 amIf I ever manage to outgrow my Hoist/IronMaster DBs, which top out at 45 lbs., that's the way I'd go, though.Clearwater47 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 10:14 amYeah, I think the biggest benefit is the higher weight capacity. But, I hate adjusting the weight.
Like everything, it’s a tradeoff.

100 lbs./side?
Somehow I doubt that'll ever be an issue for me

The only reason I'd go with the Pepins over the QuickDraws is I can see me possibly topping-out the latter's 60 lb. max, but I doubt I'd ever exceed the 85 lb. Pepins—except for farmer carries, I guess.

Both options are great, in my opinion.
