Race to 225 OH Press

#1

Post by hector » Tue Dec 26, 2017 4:19 am

There's already a race to a 275 overhead press.
But that's likely not in the cards for some of us in 2018.

So here's the race to 225 lbs.

I hit 200 a month or so back, after being stuck at 192.5 for a couple years. Press is feeling good though, so 225 should come in the next few months.

Ergh, fine I'll join another race I'll never win or even complete.

Pressed 195 during my last training cycle and then missed 200 in testing. The way I'm progressing I'll be happy to put that last 5 pounds on it this year. But sure, let's aim for 2 plates. Who knows

In. I've been at 200lbs for the last few months or so. 225 won't come anytime soon but maybe by late summer or so.

I’m in. I hit 215 in the spring. 207.5 earlier today. Hopefully I can keep making progress and actually get two plates soon.

Been stuck at 200lb for quite a while now as well so I'm in. Hopefully break 225lb for summer next year.

The best I've pressed is 205, it will be a while before I hit 225. I don't train press for strength like that anymore.

I took a stab at this on Monday. Not there yet.

@BostonRugger have you tried the stricter variant?

Yes. The trouble is that it doesn’t allow me to “lift” as much “weight.”

*turns off dickish snark as we are outside of shitpost land*

@mgil was there a particular reason you asked?

Yeah, I think, based on your speed to the weak point and your squats, you’re probably quick enough that getting form locked up with a stricter press would allow for you to have the bar in a better position for the movement. I think the hip thrust is putting the bar too far out in front of you.

@mgil interesting. You’re absolutely right that I have bar path issues with pushing it out front. When I had a beard (RIP), I tried to brush it with the bar on the way up to cue a straight bar path. So, yeah it’s been a problem.

I may try to give this kind of pressing more priority in my next cycle. Last two cycles have involved the “1.0” press for 7’s between @6-@8. I’ve been doing it after 20-30 reps of bench (plus light squats). This means I’m gassed to the point that the load stays very low (110-130 range).

This is why i quit even trying 2.0 Never got that ironed out. Seemed like a lot of extra effort, and switching confirmed that, at least for me.
Went strict (er) with the hips forward to get the head/torso back ala Thrall's vid. But no attempt to bounce the bar.
Instant improvement.
