We could expand the "Marketplace" area for vendors/promotions/etc.

Definitely.

What's nice about the forum software is that you can tag people. If we have some vendors here who log in every once in a while, they'd get the tag and can find the post in particular. That's nice when someone is wondering "can X be made for rack Y?" type of questions.

If they roll out something new, or if there is a promo (Black Friday, etc.) then the Marketplace would be a great place to post that stuff and build site traffic there.
