Bands, chains, wraps, straps, racks... are you sure this is training related?

I've been keeping a loose eye on the market for leg presses again and ran across this.

https://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/spo/ ... 57429.html

It's NOT a big commercial unit, which to me might be a good thing (space and bulk wise). Does anyone know if it's a good unit? The seller says he will let it go for $300 and that the padding is in perfect condition. He said the brand is "Parabody Serious Steel", which I figure is just Parabody, but I can't find much info on the internet about it other than random sales.

How can you tell if it's got the bad "roller bearings" that Cody mentioned, versus the better "linear bearings"? I saw that it was described somewhere "Quad wheels rollers with needle bearings".

It's the bodysolid Hack/Leg press. It even says so on the serious steel website, BTW its $1495 on there. It's supposed to have 1000lb capacity, but the reviews on amazon say it's pretty flimsy (like it looks). Though for 300$...

The "bad rollers" are just little castors riding in the C-channel (They're not even real bearings). The better Rollers are bigger Rubber wheels with the bearings inside them, ideally running on a rod which is gives even force transfer and prevents wear of the castors.

Looks like this:

That is not a roller bearing unit, but $300 is about right for those kinds of machines in many markets. If it has steel wheels, it will be super gritty feeling (and adding weight increases resistance more than the weight being added, more dramatically the heavier the total load) but at least they won't break. If it has vinyl rollers, I've seen them break before with strong guys putting work in on them.

If you don't like it, you should be able to sell it for what you've got in it pretty easily. That said, moving those things sucks, so make sure you're willing to deal with the transportation in that case.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm really grappling with whether I should get one or not. I did some math and by moving stuff around I can cram one in. Usually I subscribe to the "buy once cry once" mentality and like to get good equipment. But part of the problem with the good equipment, like what I assume this one is:

Isn't just the expense ($1500) but it's so much heavier (transportation) and takes a bigger footprint.

....I'll continue thinking.....

Any feedback on the Body Solid GLPH1100 Leg Press? There's one nearby on FB Marketplace for $450 that looks barely used.

Used the 30 degree leg press today at the Globo gym.
....i am just starting up again and completely detained. I did eight plates per side three sets of eight. F****** stupid ass machine known to man. And I have nothing against the machines, as they will be our masters soon enough. But God damn the machine as long as f***, and it must take like 16 to 20 plates for a decently strong guy to get anything out of it

Edit: ....a strong per could use 16 plates per side.

And on top of that my feet were fairly low on the push plate, pretty good range of motion

I'm just keyboard warrioring here, but ain't that one of several reasons why single-leg is the way to go?

Funny enough, I occasionally do blocks of single leg leg press.

Now thinking about it, I don't recall ever seeing this done at the gym.

The thing is still really fucking long huge machine due to the 30 deg angle thing.

I had already been thinking about it when I originally posted this, but I got access to a leg press again recently and have been hitting some single-leg work on it. First time on a leg press since I was, I don't know, 13? It seems to be working very nicely for some quadriceps tendinopathy and feels very specific to cycling, which is more or less my primary sport these days. I might have to buy one of the damn things.

Single leg on the leg press is interesting.

It seems you have to keep your single-leg, knee, femur, ankle more in line with the pure linear aspect of the machine. .... maybe not 'have to', but seems more natural and easier to do so.

If you are even remotely bigger than average (i.e. not an insect), most people will get into a leg press machine, and do something that looks like their bilateral squat: Toes out a bit (to a lot), knee go out a bit (to a lot), thighs get into your rib cage, gotta get the belly out of the way.

For some reason, single leg leg press, you can track straight ahead easier, but, you use a lot less weight, less than just half-ing the bilateral load (Even taking the mass of the sled into account). I mean you naturally put the single foot more to the center of the push plate, and toes forward.

Also, with heavy bilateral leg press, depending on your foot placement, load, size of beer-gut (or even if flat tummy), etc the lower back will round a bit. But with the single leg variety, sure, because the load it less, BUT the off leg isn't doing nothing, the hip and lumbar don't seem to shift around as much with one leg as with a two-legged leg press.

Never done single leg press but that description has a lot of parallels with the difference between squats and pistol squats. Like you don’t just lift a leg up and start doing pistols, foot needs to be basically straight forward relative to the pelvis and it’s definitely more than twice as hard even if load is the same.

Maybe they even feel similar?
