In the garage when it’s 88 and I spent 3 hours standing on a 60 degree incline in a biblical downpour with lightning hitting approximately 6 feet away to see Def Leppard and Journey. That’s right, I’ve seen Dave Matthews, DL, and Journey in the same week. If no one mocks me for that, I’ll know that no one reads this.

Clean and press
170x1@8.5
Easier than last week’s @9, so that’s good. Next jump will be 185, so may just try to make this easier for a while.
135x25 in 7:00

Farmers Walk
187 1/2 per hand (all the weight that I have) for 120’ x2 with 5:00 sweaty rest. Tweaked my back on a fast take off on the second one. I should probably belt up even on these light weights. My wife just tweaked her back working out so maybe it’s a sympathy tweak? Maybe I can spin it that way? Maybe? Anyone?

I read, but... ewww.

A friend of mine saw Def/Journey and was blown away by how bad the mix was for Journey.

Hard to tell from where we were on the lawn but they sounded pretty good. I never realized how much they are NEAL SCHON w/Journey. Every song has no less than two solos, plus he did another one in place of a song, and that’s in an 80 minute set. He brought some soldiers on stage that would be deploying soon, which is cool, especially on the 4th, but then Jack Black solo’d the Star Spangled Banner at them. Felt cringy to me. I dunno. They were good, but I’m a metal-head and Def Leppard was my gateway drug.

My wife likes DMB. I mean, I’ll watch Carter Beauford play drums all day, but I never listen to the band. I did expect to hear some cool jamming, but nope. Oh-for-three. I’ve seen Tool, Primus, and DMB, and all had the chance to just find a bouncy fat groove and do some virtuostic jamming, but all three decided instead to explore fucking wind chimes and feedback. I want Tommy the Cat not whale songs, motherfucker! Some of us aren’t high!

....I’ve been wanting to get that off my chest.

This is what I posted on the BBM FB page:

On Thursday I felt a sharp pain in my lower back doing some beltless farmers walks. In the past this would have caused me to panic and cancel everything physical for the next few days. But since finding BBM and realizing we aren’t as delicate as we’re told, I kept moving all the next day, and this morning did a big silly inflatable obstacle course run with my kids with no pain. I then went in and had a great deadlift session.

I did get a little cocky and try to do my scheduled log pressing afterwards which didn’t go so well. I felt a pop and a sharp pain on the clean, but again, I didn’t panic or stop the workout. I tried to bench instead, but the arch hurt, so I did flat back floor press.
TL;DR- thanks to the BBM crew for showing us how much we can do and special thanks to Austin Baraki for showing us how to handle pain.

The specifics:
Deadlift
405x1
435x1@7.5/8
405x2,2,2,2@7

Easy. I put my shins right up to the bar and concentrated on getting my hips just a hair lower and these felt WAY better.

Log press
145xNope@Fuck

Floor Press w/flat back
185x6,6,6,6,6,9

My back is feeling better, but I’m still avoiding the log press for now. The slow lifts feel ok.

Squat
335x1
370x1@8.5
295x5,5,5,5,5

I might have to post a form check. Even when I make sure to keep my elbows pinned the bar still rolls up my back. I’m not leaning over that far, either, so it’s confusing. Squats always suck.

Bench
245x1
275x1@9
225x4,4,4,4,4

Chins
BWx5
+25x4
35x3
45x3
55x3
BWx10,8

I’ll try the log on Wednesday since it’s push press and it’ll be lighter. I’ll definitely belt up.

Trying to be smart and not log press until back is 100%. Part of me isn’t unhappy to be taking a break, to be honest.

Deadlift
405x1@5
435x1@7
375x4,4,4,4,4

CGBP
195x8,8,8,8

Squat
135x5
185x5
225x5
275x5,5
Basically just did these to work on bringing my hands in, hoping that would fix the rolling-up-my-neck issue. Posted a video to the BBM FB group for a form check. I would do one here if I knew how to embed the video. Sometimes I’m still a bit Luddite-ish.

Yeah, as much as I don’t really want to be on those platforms I may have to do that. I’m getting people repeating the standard cues at me in the FB group even though I pointed out that I knew them and it was the execution that was the issue.

Hammer grip doorway chins
BWx43 in 7:00
I know Jordan says these are suboptimal for hypertrophy, but I also feel them in my biceps and abs, which are the very first and second things to get skipped in my workouts.

Brick Press (trying to find a way to floor press in the garage, so I put the barbell on leftover firepit bricks. Actually more of a Spoto Press because I'm scared to set them down in case they're not in the right spot.)
135x8,8 at slow tempo. This won't work so I'll have to find something else.

Bent rear delt swings
30s x 20,15. Whoa. Definitely feel them.

Deadlift

425x2@7
445x2@8.5-9 (Same spot in my back started to yell at me. Dummy.)

Bench (w/ belt to be careful)
210x8,8,8,8

Squat (Working on bringing my hands in and getting my knees farther forward. Feels good on lighter weights and super weird when it gets heavier.)
225x5
275x5
315x2
365x1@8.5 - too deep?)
315x1

Seated DB press
50's x10,10

Talked with a trainer and his client about doing farmers with DBs and my injury. They decided to take a lap of the gym but only grabbed the 45's and could talk during it, saying "I don't feel it in my traps or grip." I had to grab the 120's and do a lap because I'm dumb, but at least I put my belt on.

7/16-Montana Method as written(mostly) for two weeks to really make sure my back is healed.

High-bar Squat- this felt weird and dirty, but I have to admit that I liked the lack of pressure on my elbows and shoulders, and it may have helped me figure out the “knees forward” thing everyone keeps talking about. I’ve been “back-back-back”-ing so much on my squats to use my hams that I have Louis Simmons legs: no quads at all. I tried the last set with a low bar but same mechanics and may have it. We will see when I get above baby weights.

225x5
245x5,5,5,5,5

Review: felt easy yesterday, but I’m actually a little sore in my quads right above the knee, which is the part that never grows, so I’m pretty fired up about that.

Bench
225x5,5,5,5,5. I was supposed to use 220, but YOLO, as the kids say. I think. I’m pretty sure I’ve never gotten 5x5 with 225 with only 3 minutes rest.

Weighted chins
BWx5
35x3
45x3,3,3
50x3
55x3
25x5

God, what a shitty workout. I can’t string together two good squat workouts in a row. My set up rarely feels good, and if it does, my legs will feel off. I feel like posting something to the form check forum, but don’t want to get on IG and get addicted to yet another platform just for videos. The

Set-up:
* Most comfortable is thumbs over, but my elbows tend to go up on the descent no matter how hard I try to pin them to my side.
*When I go thumbs around it’s like my shelf just disappears and I can’t situate the bar well. Elbows stay down, though.
* Either way, I know I’m supposed to bring my hands in as much as I can, but that shit hurts my elbows.

So damned if I do, and damned if I don’t. I should ask around and see if anyone has any tips. Maybe I’ll just high bar for awhile since I really need quad work anyway. I don’t know.

Squat:
245x3
285x2
315x1
335x1
365x1,1@9. Couldn’t find a groove-90% shouldn’t feel like a 9.

Bench:
180x3
210x2
235x1,1
255x1
275x1@9.75. Elbows hurting from the squats and no pop at all.

Deadlift:
405x1@8. 405 should be 80%, but I have nothing. At this point I was so discouraged that I didn’t even want to deadlift, and I ALWAYS want to deadlift. I just had a low stress week a few weeks ago and will have another one coming up, so that’s not it.

High-bar Squat. On further review, is really a mid-bar Squat, with the bar just above the spine of the scapula on the natural shelf. Whatever. More upright, more legs, and no bar movement.

275x3,3,3,3,3.

Guessed at this as being 80%. It clearly wasn’t, because the last set felt like @6. Worked up for funsies.

315x1
335x1
365x1@9. This puts my eRM at 384, which is only 15 lbs or so off what I
Could do right now. Am I gonna get stronger this way?!

Bench:
Nope. Elbows are pissed at my attempts to bring them in on the low bar, so I found something to work my shoulders without taxing them too much.

BTN Press:
55x10
65x10,10,10,15. Careful that I don’t swap angey elbows for angry shoulders.

Last week of no events.

Front Squat. Man, I wish I’d ditched the LBBS and done a ton of these sooner. Focused on staying neutral and upright and using only my legs. After all this time struggling to figure out how to get my weight off my heels and onto my mid foot, Chad and Max just say “press your big toe down,” and ta da. Jeez. The work sets reveal just how right I was about my quad weakness.
225x4,4,4,3,3,3,3. Puts my e1RM at 300, which is probably the low side of right.

Bench: elbows still complaining about my stupid attempts to bring them in closet for the stupid low bar. Used same weight as last week and it’s closer to 75% than 70%, that’s for sure. Not sure who I thought I was kidding. And really, I can’t bench 300 right now, so it’s still a bit high.

225x4,4,4,3,3,3,3

Seated cable row: to simulate the arm over arm hummer pull I use a full body extension followed by a four second negative which is like the fast hands getting tight for the next pull.
100x10(0-0-4)@lol
150x10
200x10. This porridge is juuuust right.

Then my 6 year old wanted to lift. She’s freakishly strong-she can do two dead-hang pull ups in a row, but she’s not really ready for barbells and dumbbells. I had her do some goblet squats holding a 10, she deadlifted my farmers handles for 40x3, and pressed a 10 for 8. She wanted to do more so I told her to do lots of BW squats and pushups, which she turned up her nose at. No cross fit in her future, I guess.
