Re: 5k accomplished. Slowly. New goal: Half Marathon.
2023 June 23 Friday Afternoon (Deadlift Day)
Main
Deads: 420 x 5 x 5
Bench: 280 x 1s x 2r (missed 3rd rep)
Bench: 280 x 2s x 3r
Bench: 240 x 6s x 5r
T-Bar Rows: 210 x 5s x 10r
Aux
EZ Curls: 105 x 5 x 5
Ab Wheel: 2s x 10r
Reverse Hyper: 160 x 5s x 10r
Tonnage
Deads: 10,500
Bench: (560 + 1,680 + 7,200) = 9,440
T-Bar Rows: 10,500
EZ Curls: 2,625
———————————————————————
Total: 33,065
#################################
Humid AF today. Maybe that was a factor in my foot slipping while benching my first set of 280, causing me to miss my 3rd rep. Thank goodness I have safeties.
I’m not a PL, so I don’t really use PL form, but after failing that rep I decided to mimic PLs and bring my feet back to see if that would work better. I think it did? There was no more slipping, but then there’s almost never any slipping anyway. Idk. I went on to get all reps in the next two sets of benching 280 x 3.
Trying to slowly ease back into ab wheel. It’s a weird exercise. If you haven’t done it in awhile then you can easily knock out a bunch of reps, but then the next morning you’ll wake up functionally crippled, unable to even sit up in bed.
We’ll see how tomorrow morning goes.
Bright side of all this, it’s fun to curl over 100 for 5 x 5 again.
Normally I would have deadlifted 315 x 5 x 5 double overhand as backoff sets after my work sets. Not going to anymore. My hands just got too torn up, it’s a lot to ask when I’m doing grip work a couple days also.

Re: 5k accomplished. Slowly. New goal: Half Marathon.
This is what I want. I’m currently at 90 x3s x4r, which is the most I’ve ever managed and absolutely the result of putting them first before back work. I’m looking forward to the first set of 100x5 soon.

2023 June 24 Saturday Morning
Run: 60 minutes slow AF, few minutes of sprints at end
############################
Got 5 miles in 55 minutes. Which is slow AF, arguably so slow it’s not even running, but also a 5 mile PR for me.
Woot woot!

2023 June 24 Saturday Afternoon (Grip)
Fat Grips Deadlift: 210 x 5 x 5
Saxon Bar Deads: 70 x 5 x 5
Saxon Bar Curls: 50 x 5 x 5
Wrist Curls: 150 x 5s x 10r
Finger Curls: 150 x 5s x 10r
Saxon bar is no joke!
Totally ignorant of what the Saxon deadlift equivalent of a 225 bench is. IOW, what a basic milestone to aim for is. Whatever it is though, I have a feeling I’m a ways off yet.

Re: 5k accomplished. Slowly. New goal: Half Marathon.
2023 June 25 Sunday Afternoon (Off Day)
Double Overhand Grip Deadlift (no hook) PR Attempt: 405 x 1 x 1
Got it!
Could I have done this before I even started grip training a month or so ago?
Maybe.
Was it easy?
Fuck no.
But, lots of people who don’t even train grip can do this, so I figured I should be able to also.
If I remember right I tried double overhand deadlifting (no hook grip) awhile back and it was easy up to 365, at which point difficulty increased rapidly.

2023 June 25 Sunday Afternoon (Off Day)
126lb Thomas Inch Replica Dumbbell: Picked up for first time!
###############
Weird story.
I own a Thomas Inch replica dumbbell. For no good reason at all. Not the legit 172lb one. Instead it’s a 58kg/126lb trainer. Handle is same diameter.
I bought it a year or two ago during Covid from a legit grip athlete who was abruptly moving abroad. I could not lift it up at all. Never could. It’s much more difficult than it looks.
So, I was surprised yesterday when a few hours after a successful double overhand 405 deadlift PR I decided “Why not?” and thought I’d try to lift it. I only got one edge a few mm off the ground, but that was a massive PR. Had never budged it before.
A few minutes later I decided I’d try again with a better position and a more resolved effort. Lifted it totally off the ground, up to my knee!!!!!
Even though my RollingThunder PR hasn’t budged, looks like there were still gains from the fat grip training.

Re: 5k accomplished. Slowly. New goal: Half Marathon.
A bunch of grip lifting in here including a really old dude who has some world records. Seems somewhere in the 75-100% BW range would be very respectable for the Saxon bar. Flex your wrists to get your fingers more under the "bar".

Odd Haugen. Former Olympian and WSM competitor. He's also the guy who "Discovered" Licis and got him to compete, among other things. He is a nice guy in person as well. Everyone interested in strength should know who he is and be annoyed by this sort of video. Not the least of which because virtually everything in that title is incorrect. I don't understand this current "Unliftable DB" thing going on, plenty of people have lifted it.

Re: 5k accomplished. Slowly. New goal: Half Marathon.
Cgeorg, thank you!
Sadly, 75% of BW on a Saxon bar deadlift is a distant pipe dream for now. When I hit 100 lb I’m going to celebrate. And that won’t be for a minute.
I’m a big fan of Odd Haugen and Juji and Magnus, but hadn’t seen that video before. Watched the first part this morning before work. Can’t wait to finish.

HardArtery, I wondered if Odd was as friendly and nice in person as he comes across on YouTube. Thanks for the confirmation! I haven’t gotten to the part of the video with the unliftable dumbbell yet and am not familiar with the controversy.Hardartery wrote: ↑Tue Jun 27, 2023 8:22 amOdd Haugen.
