Plate math is harder than regular math. Just make sure to carry a barbell to any interview you think this might be a problem at, and make them squat it and change the plates. Then they'll be sympathetic to your disability.

DR, for all his majestic flaws, has built himself an impressive amount of work capacity.

Oh, I'm beginning to feel it. This is the last week of crazy volume before easing off a bit and trying to finally squat MORE than 600 lbs.

So, right, updates. I actually recorded the shit I did, but I don't remember many wacky gym hijinks. The assorted idiocy of humanity starts to blur together after a while.

Except for the guy wearing the "I'm Not On Steroids But Thanks For Asking" shirt that no one could have possibly assumed was on steroids. That one stood out. Asking him if he is on steroids isn't complimenting him, it's insulting steroids.

Clean and jerks on Friday caused a split at the base of the ring finger on my right hand. Continuing to clean and jerk made it worse. Funny, that. After wiping the blood off the bar, the rest of the workout went smoothly. Hopefully it will be recovered enough to not just get re-opened when clean and jerking on Tuesday.

The little split thing on my hand didn't really bother me on Tuesday. Maria Sharapova was on the gym TV, which confounded my attempts to stop watching TV and actually lift.

Tuesday 8-28-2018
Clean and Jerk:
275 lbs 6x2
Squats: 445 lbs 5x5
Push Press: 235 lbs 5x3
Snatch Grip Deadlifts: 365 lbs 5x3
DB Preacher Curls: 35 lbs 5x8

Now, for whatever fucking reason, that little split had grown into a total pain in the goddamn ass on Wednesday. The little scab and surrounding skin had gotten all hard and stiff (no homo) and shit, which caused it to ache like hell when the bar was squishing and bending it and shit. After one work rep, I realized this wasn't going to work. And then went to dig up my straps so I could at least PULL the fucking weight, even if I couldn't grip it. I had never actually used straps for regular deadlifts before, because I am a Man and can usually firmly grip the shaft myself (no homo). Having actually used them, I can say with absolute certainty that anyone who used straps to test a "max" "deadlift" is a pussy punk biggity bitch not even worthy of the dignity a challenge to the Field of Honor conveys. No longer did I have to bother worrying about actually holding onto the bar I was trying to lift, my hands were rather literally tied to it. The bar even seemed to break off the ground easier because my hands were literally tied to the bar. Which may also say something about my grip when Deadlifting properly.

Besides my own problems, the full inadequacy of the human species was well on display. First, a group of skinny high schoolers managed to fail 100 lbs with the safety squat bar, then left the safety squat bar on the platform with the weight still on it. Later, someone got that mess out of the way so they could almost halfsquat 205 lbs. Which, to be fair, was probably double bodyweight. Even the gym TVs were plagued by human failure, as Andy Murray lost and was eliminated from the US Open like the punk ass, shitkicking, giraffe necked bum he is.

Deadlifts:
475 lbs 8x3
Close Grip Bench: 215 lbs 4x8
Front Squats: 315 lbs 3x5

Snatches involved a lot of Murraying (that's my new word for failure, based on the events of Andy Murray's life). 220 lbs for doubles may have been a BIT optimistic. After a lot of sound and fury (and wailing and gnashing of teeth), I did manage to get them all done.

Somehow it got out that DirtyRed is/was a competent golfer. So now every fool asks him how to stop skulling chips (really, that has come up from multiple different people) and blabs about how golf is "funny" in one form or another. It's a MUCH less imbecilic conversation than the old days of TOD, but no less of a time waster.

Side Note: Keep your goddamn weight forward (practice hitting bump and runs off of just your front foot for exaggeration's sake) and golf isn't so much "haha" funny as it is "stab stab"/"we the jury find the defendant" funny.

Thurday 8-30-2018
Snatches:
220 lbs 5x2
Overhead Squats: 205 lbs 3x3
Squats: 500 lbs 8x3
Curls: 100 lbs 5x8

Deadlifts ONCE AGAIN gave me trouble on Friday, for the same goddamn reason. This time, I managed to get three reps in before that crack in my hand that had turned into a thick skin/scab mess and keeps getting pinched by the bar hurt enough to no longer be able to hold onto the bar. Then I went and got the goddamn straps to actually be able to pull all dat weight. The good news is that these were the smoothest sets of 6 I think I've ever done on deadlifts, with weights that definitely used to leave me all completely exhausted and walking like Frankenstein's Monster.

MAYBE my fucking hand will be 100% on Monday. Though, that being Labor Day, is going to be a nightmare of everyone cramming into the gym at once before it closes at 1 PM. You'd think LABOR Day would feature more LABOR. Should be some prime potential for top notch assclownery though, I might have to write down some of that shit.

Huh. It seems I forgot to update LAST week as well as this week. Good thing I have this shit written down somewhere.

Monday 9-3-2018
Snatch:
215 lbs 8x2
Bench Press: 280 lbs 5x5
Deadlifts: 465 lbs 6x4
Dips: 5x10 15 lbs added

Tuesday 9-4-2018
Clean and Jerk:
290 lbs 10x1
Power Clean: 245 lbs 4x2
Squats: 455 lbs 5x5
Front Squat: 335 lbs 5x3
Curls: 100 lbs 5x8

Wednesday 9-5-2018
Hang Snatches:
190 lbs 6x2
Front Squats: 335 lbs 5x3
Bench Press: 285 lbs 3x5
Deadlifts: 480 lbs 5x3

Thursday 9-6-2018
Snatch:
225 lbs 5x1
Overhead Squats: 205 lbs 3x3
Squats: 510 lbs 8x3
Push Press: 245 lbs 5x3

Friday 9-7-2018
Clean and Jerk:
300 lbs 5x1
Bench Press: 295 lbs 8x3
Deadlifts: 510 lbs 6x2
DB Preacher Curls: 35 lbs 5x8

Moving onto a week that is still SORT OF in memory and not just on paper, these snatches on Monday felt really strong. Which I feel is something I say for every Monday, possibly because it's after a weekend of hardly doing jack shit, and every other day of the week comes after some heavy ass workout.

Monday 9-10-2018
Snatches:
225 lbs 10x1
Hang Snatch: 205 lbs 5x2
Bench Press: 295 lbs 8x3
Deadlifts: 465 lbs 6x4
Curls: 100 lbs 5x8

Tuesday 9-11-2018
Clean and Jerk:
300 lbs 6x1
Power Cleans: 255 lbs 4x2
Squats: 510 lbs 8x3
Front Squats: 335 lbs 5x3
Push Press: 245 lbs 3x3

Wednesday 9-12-2018
Speed Squats:
300 lbs (plus bands) 4x8
Speed Bench: 185 lbs 4x8
Chin Ups: 5x8
Seated DB Press: 65 lbs 4x8
DB Row: 75 lbs 4x8

These snatches weren't nearly as strong. It took about ten tries to get the two I did. Now, this is an old PR weight in the thick of a lot of heavy lifting, so it should be no surprise it was shaky. Power snatches still went well. I still like the odds of getting SOME progress when maxing out in the week after this coming one.

Also, squats could best be described as "tectonic." In that they both felt as heavy as a continental plate and also moved like one (note: that means really slowly). Though this was jumping from Barely Over 500 to Slightly Under 600 pretty goddamn quick for a "taper" that's probably entirely too fast but fuck it.

Thursday 9-13-2018
Snatch:
235 lbs 2x1
Power Snatch: 195 lbs 5x2
Overhead Squats: 215 lbs 3x3
Squats: 575 lbs 5x1
Push Press: 265 lbs 3x1

I was TRYING to get three clean and jerks, but didn't shove up the jerk high enough on the third attempt, failed it, and figured that was enough. I think I sort of mildly jammed up my right shoulder doing it. It has been feeling a little funny kind of underneath the back side of it. It's not really painful or achy, but it very clearly feels slightly weird when moved ways. It's surely nothing that won't heal if I ignore it and keep lifting. Surely.

The bench press reps went so well that I'm fairly certain they just weren't heavy enough to get back into heavy weights. But it's encouraging anyway.

Friday 9-14-2018

I'm probably going to stop trying to drive the full Olympic lifts after maxing out everything this coming week. I'm tired of my elbows, shoulders, thumbs, and occasionally knees aching over stuff that makes my workouts take goddamn forever, I'll never seriously compete at, AND doesn't greatly drive any athletic adaptation, all with substandard equipment (like generic 29mm multipurpose bars that might actually be straight if I can pick out a good one). The point was to get dat dere 2play snatch, 3playt C&J, and 2,000 lbs "super total." All of which I've done, some of which I've actually surpassed. I'll still probably do power snatches with some regularity, in order to train power production to the what extent it can be trained, but will mostly be focused on general training as if I were trying to return to rugby. Since I am. Which will mean some small (practically infinitesimal) amount of conditioning.

And I know I've mostly stopped chronicling feats of human stupidity in the gym. Largely because I have become desensitized to the general idiocy and ineptitude of the average, hopeless everyman. Apparently, the human species took this as some sort of challenge and sent it's worst and dimmest into the gym over this past week. It started on Tuesday with a guy doing *deep inhale* close grip reverse grip tempo half rep incline bench press, with an empty bar. It's shit like this that makes me realize how stupid I'm not. At my dumbest, I can manage TWO stupid things at a time. This man managed to combined about a half dozen.

Thursday, I had to wait on people to free up stuff in order to start with snatches. I didn't have to wait on one of the bars that isn't terrible, nor one of the only two platforms. I had to wait for people to stop squatting with the goddamn bumper plates. Inside the racks. With the safeties set. There are only 8 45 lbs bumper plates, which is USUALLY plenty, as I almost always need no more than 4, and USUALLY there aren't two separate people using 4 each to squat. They even added metal plates after the bumpers, so I know they know that metal plates fucking exist.

This was topped on Friday with a guy using a pair of bumper plates on the smith machine. At least Captain Adjective, of the *deep inhale* reverse grip close grip tempo half rep incline empty bar bench press, might be able to conjecture some wacky justification for how that's effective "prehab" or somehow accomplishes SOMETHING or other. I can't begin to fathom what the fucking point of bumpers on the smith machine was.

And then I saw the hashtag "#ChallengeExcepted" on a FaceBook post from someone who went to the same college I did. This must be what rock bottom feels like.

you compete, seriously or not. I'm looking at doing a meet after Nationals. Do one with me. Or on your own. I have no idea where you live, but it's probably not close. If you find a meet somewhere interesting, maybe I'd fly out.

I live in Kentucky. I know, I'm sorry to hear that too.

I have also never, ever understood how people enjoy simply doing meets just for the sake of doing a meet. DR needs SOMETHING to accomplish, like qualifying for nationals in powerlifting. Which there isn't really available in weightlifting.

But MOSTLY this is about opportunity cost. All the snatching and clean and jerking and such takes a lot of time and energy that could be better spent FINALLY GETTING MY SQUAT OVER 600 LBS. Or getting my bench press up. Or maybe even deadlifting if I get really, really bored. I could conceivably have nothing else to do but go to a nearby weightlifting meet, but, thanks to years of golf, DR is an anal retentive maniac that INSISTS on doing everything (except cardio) at 100%. And the goddamn training for a weightlifting meet would continue to detract from training things I'd rather be training at this point.

I appreciate the offer (and will gleefully crash through your door in order to fingerprint up all ur barz if I'm ever in Arizona in the future), but Arizona is quite a bit of a commute.

Testing maxes was a mixed deal. Got a solid new bench press max, completely failed to progress clean and jerk and squats, manage to take 240 lbs from the ground to overhead in one pull with a snatch grip that almost certainly wouldn't have passed in competition due to the elbow bend, and was sabotaged on deadlift by the goddamn bars I have to put up with.

I'm sure you'll think of something new.

Hot new "General S&C" program, written by either a mad genius or a mad crazy person, underway now.

There is PROBABLY an alumni rugby match occurring the 27th or so, so about four weeks to get in less embarrassingly bad shape for that.

I didn't think squats at ~70% for sets of 8 would have been as tremendously exhausting as they were. Considering I was FAIRLY certain I was previously doing squats for sets of 8 with about 70%. I WAS going to do more of the jumprope to warm back up to (ugh) conditioning, but after one "set," my right quadriceps started cramping and that's all the excuse I need to stop doing (ugh) conditioning!

Monday 10-1-2018
Squats:
545 lbs single, 425 lbs 6x8
Bench Press: 315 lbs single, 235 lbs 6x8
Dips: 5x10
Jump Rope: 1:15 for exactly one set Maybe drink some Powerade and do more next time.

Tuesday 10-2-2018
Deadlifts:
515 lbs single, 415 lbs 5x6
Chin Ups: 5x8
Barbell Row: 205 lbs 4x8
Curls: 100 lbs 5x8

Goddamn Stupid Ass Sled Thing: Put one 45 lbs plate on it to give enough resistance that it wouldn't slide out away from me, causing a face plant. Pushed it about 40 paces (the maximum length available without turning it around) at a time, with a short breather in between goes. Also pushed it back and forth once.

Friday 10-5-2018
Squats:
475 lbs 10x3 (good lord)
Bench Press: 315 lbs single, 295 lbs 5x3

Saturday 10-6-2018:
400m lap: 2x1
40m Sprints: 5x1, short rest in between.
I also practiced kicking a rugby ball a bit, which was more of an excuse to run back and forth after the ball than anything. I am not good at drop kicks.

I am really not good at conditioning.

I don't know what the hell I was doing on Wednesday, but I accidentally fucked up the order I wanted to do stuff in. I was halfway through speed squats before I rememebered I was supposed to do the power snatches BEFORE that. I was mildly worried that power snatches wouldn't be super POWER after that, so I did 185 lbs instead of the 195 lbs I was originally planning. With that weight, they were done easily enough. I may have been able to get away with that 195 lbs.

Wednesday 10-10-2018
Speed Squats:
295 lbs (Plus bands) 4x8
Power Snatch: 185 lbs 5x2
Speed Bench: 195 lbs (Plus band)
Chin Ups: 5x8
Seated DB Press: 65 lbs 4x8

My gym decided to spend, according to Google, somewhere between four and NINE THOUSAND dollars on some fucking "Curve" treadmill instead of a power bar that's not an insult to the term. The thing IS handy for sprinting though, just run forward on it really fast and you're sprinting. It's not PURE sprinting, as the treadmill, like any other, does 99% of the work of pulling your leg backwards for you, but it's fair for conditioning anyway.

I also did me some "speed" deadlifts standing on a band stretched between the ends of the bar for additional resistance on the way up.

Thursday 10-11-2018
Deadlifts:
515 lbs 3x1
Speed Deadlifts: 315 lbs (Plus band) 6x4
DB Row: 75 lbs 4x8
DB Preacher Curls: 35 lbs 5x10
Jump Rope: 1:15 x2
Curve Sprint Thingy: 15 seconds on, 30 seconds off, 10 times over

Friday I witnessed something that boggled even my mind. Two Asian guys curling. By which I mean they were BOTH curling the same bar simultaneously, with one guy "spotting" the other by doing a third of the work. With 50 lbs. They were both wearing gloves for this. Looking back, I'm actually shocked they weren't also wearing belts.

Friday 10-12-2018

Bench Press: 315 lbs 3x1
Paused Bench: 275 lbs 5x2
DB Bench Press: 85 lbs 4x10
Roman Chair Sit Ups: 5x10
Glute/Ham Raises: 4x8

Saturday 10-13-2018

Squats:
545 lbs single, 425 lbs 6x8
Bench Press: 315 lbs single, 245 lbs 6x8
Dips: 5x10

The right SI joint area started aching towards the end of ALL THESE DEADLIFTS and continued to bother me throughout the goddamn weak. To the point I just rested on Saturday instead of running around, because it really doesn't take much for me to weeny out of conditioning. I continue to have no idea what the actual problem is, what causes it, or even why it gets better.

SI joint area felt better on Monday, possibly due to foam rolling the shit out of the entire glute/hip area. I'm not sure if it's actually an SI joint problem, or piriformis, or glute, or what. But it's better now so back to ignoring it entirely.

Rugby Day:
There wasn't enough turn out for a full Rugby Union (the one true rugby) match, and none of us have a damn clue how to play League or Tens, AND the Alumni, being mostly fat and old, would like to have some subs among the twelve of us that showed up to platoon off and on the field as if it were a hockey game, so we ended up playing 7s. Goddamn 7s. TWO GAMES. Might have gone better if the Alumni weren't always 90% forwards. The first game, people would shout from the sideline if anyone wanted a sub every time play stopped, which happened a lot, because we kept throwing the ball forward, because we had no idea what to do in 7s besides run around screaming. The second game, I played the entire first half without realizing it because no one wanted to sub.

We may have had more players had we not had about 10 days official notice for a 10 AM kickoff. Also, I may have actually scored, for once, if a guy didn't throw the ball forward in front of me for whatever reason. You MIGHT think DR kind of overran the play, but if you had ever seen him "run," that would dispel that particular thought.

The benefit of 7s instead of actual Rugby is that I wasn't cripplingly sore, needing to turn from the waist to look left and right, on Monday. I am going to be trying to shorten up the weight lifting, partially through shorter rest outside of the fat volume sets of squats and stuff, to free up more time for some more effective and consistent conditioning.

Monday 10-29-2018
Squats:
545 lbs 1x1 425 lbs 6x8
Bench Press: 315 lbs 1x1 245 lbs 6x8
Dips: 5x10

Tuesday 10-30-2018
Deadlifts:
515 lbs 1x1
Speed Deadlifts: 335 lbs plus band 6x4
Barbell Row: 205 lbs 4x8
Curls: 100 lbs 5x8
Heavy Bag: 30 jabs, 30 crosses, 30 left hooks, 30 right hooks, 20 1-2 combos
Jump Rope: 1 min x4

Wednesday was Halloween, so the gym staff was wearing dippy costumes. One of them was dressed as Hange Zoe and I didn't recognize it due to the logo on her jacket's sleeve and the glasses that she had never worn before, because I certainly don't watch that nerd shit.

Also, I figured to do "speed" sets with fewer reps, but for more sets, to keep the SPEED up for every rep.

Wednesday 10-31-2018
Power Snatch:
195 lbs 5x2
Speed Bench: 195 lbs (plus bands) 8x5
Chin Ups: Did 5 sets, two minutes rest in between, for however many reps, got "40" (39 actual chin ups and one flailing, kicking, bicycling abortion because 40 is a nice round number shut up)
Seated DB Press: 65 lbs 4x8
Sled Pushing: Down and back for 4 "reps," with 30 seconds in between each trip, for two "sets" of that nonsense.

Thursday 11-1-2018
Squats:
545 lbs 1x1
Speed Squats: 295 lbs (plus bands) 8x5
Roman Chair Sit Ups: 5 lbs held behind head 5x8
DB Preacher Curls: 35 lbs 5 sets with 2 minute rests for a total of 40 reps
Heavy Bag: 30 jabs, 30 crosses, 30 left hooks, 30 right hooks, 20 1-2 combos
Jump Rope: 1 min x4

Friday 11-2-2018
Deadlifts:
515 lbs 1x1 425 lbs 5x6
Close Grip Bench Press: 225 lbs 7x5 (Can increase weight)
DB Bench Press: 80 lbs 5x10
Glute/Ham Raises: 4x8

TRYING to work out some indoor conditioning options on Saturday. Still plotting.

Saturday 11-3-2018
Chin Ups:
Same 5 sets for total reps as on Wednesday, only with 40 reps that could actually pass for reps.
Heavy Bag: 30 jabs, 30 crosses, 30 left hooks, 30 right hooks, 20 1-2 combos
Jump Rope: 1 min x4
Row Machine: 2 minutes
