Crunch Fitness

#1241

Post by alek » Fri Oct 21, 2022 8:00 am

The Crunch Fitness apparently opens next Tuesday, and I think there's going to be quite the exodus of members from the Y. I'm guessing the majority of the 20- and 30-somethings will leave for the new and shiny equipment, plus I'm sure there'll be quite a few other 20- and 30-somethings from other gyms moving there, too. It's likely going to a measurable gravitational event...

Which means that they vast majority of the people left at the Y will likely be the Silver Sneaker crowd and teenagers--since their parents are paying. I've got nothing against the Silver Sneakers per se, but the ones that will remain, since I'm sure a few of them will leave, too, will be more of the pearl-clutching, or pervert, variety that complain about the slightest noise. We're staying at the Y for the time-being since my wife teaches classes there on the side, which gets a discounted family membership for $20 a month.

And if we do leave, I'd think long and hard about going back to the uni gym since I don't need to be working out by 5:30 am anymore. The only problem there is that if classes are not in session, then the gym is closed.

I hate my Y. There is nothing for a kid to do at ours if they aren’t enrolled in classes. I was waiting with kid B while kid A was in a class. We just ran up and down the hallways until we got yelled at. Can’t have her join me in the gym on a treadmill - she’s too young.

What I’m saying is - home gym time?

Oh man. I'd have a home gym in a heartbeat, but I just don't have the space right now. I've thought about building/buying a shed in the backyard to house one, but comparing that cost to spending less than or equal to $20 a month is just a non-starter at this stage of life.

10/26/22 Wednesday [Training 116] Deuces

AMBW & Umbilicus
191.2 & 35.5

Comp Squat
365 x 2 @ 7
e1rm = 423

Comp Bench
225 x 2 @ 8
e1rm = 252

Comp Deadlift
405 x 2 @ 7
e1rm = 469

Lat Pulldown
214 x 2 @ 9.5

Triceps Pushdown
Single Arm
28 x 8 x 3

Barbell Curls
65 x 12
75 x 9,9

Cable Crunch
55 x 8
60 x 8
66 x 8

Session Length
1:00

Notes
Squat and deadlift feel good. Bench is weird; still doing the sinking thing, and it just seems to be getting more awkward rather than less. I'll probably just do my usual bench press form/stuff through the meet and then reassess.

I really want to do some more direct arm work moving forward.

Alek Does His Own Thing

#1246

Post by alek » Fri Oct 28, 2022 6:31 am

No training today. Wednesday afternoon before dinner, the kids and I were playing a board game, Monopoly Jr., on our dining room table. It's a rectangular table, and I was sitting at the head of one end with a kid on either side, which is a little different seating arrangement than when we eat, so that neither of them had to reach too far to get to the board or pieces.

After my son's second roll of the die, he kinda jumps up in the chair so that he can move his piece, but he loses his balance and starts to fall/tumble. He knocks over my glass of water, and, I still have no idea how this happened, but in his stumble, the chair he was in came towards the table. I don't know if it slid--it's on a rug--or if it tipped towards the table, but the glass fell between the table and one of the "vertical" arms that is attached to the back of the chair as the chair moved to the table, which crunched the glass, shattering it.

The glass was one of those old Pom pomegranate juice glasses, see the picture below. My wife has had them forever, and they're actually really nice drinking glasses--they're substantial, much thicker than most drinking glasses, hold about 12 ounces of liquid, and pretty strong. If the glass had falled onto the rug, I doubt it would have broken.

Irregardless, my son is tumbling out of the chair, the glass is shattered, and the broken glass is between my son and myself. Naturally, I reach over to help catch himself, and I grab shards of the broken glass while I do so. I'm not sure exactly if a piece fell on his foot or if he stepped on a piece trying to catch his own fall, but we both ended up getting cut.

Not to bury the lead any further, we both got very minor cuts. His was more of a very superficial slice on his foot, and mine were more stabs in my palm. But we both bled like a motherfucker, of course. I carried him to the bathroom, dripping blood as we went. I used a couple of washcloths to put pressure on our cuts, washed them, and put neosporin and a big bandage on his. Of course my wife, the actual medical professional, wasn't home at the time, but she looked over my work when she got home and gave me her approval. I probably should have put a bandage on mine, but I'm dumb. When I was using the vacuum to clean up the tiny shards, I re-opened the one wound that bled like crazy the first time, covering the vacuum handle in blood.

So. I want to give my palm the weekend to heal before grabbing a barbell again, and since it's so close to the meet, the extra rest is probably a good thing.

Thankfully, my daughter didn't get cut at all, and no trips to the ER were needed. Holy shit it could have been much worse.

Everything in the that video is spot on.

And that is the best, most random, one in a million, stupid injury story I've heard in a while. Congrats.

100%.

The taking one bite of their lunch and saying it's yucky bit... I about died laughing.

Yeah. I thought of something my old man used to say, "If you tried to do that again 1000 times, there's no way you do it again."

10/31/22 Monday [Training 117] Meet Week

AMBW & Umbilicus
194.8 & 36 @ weekend fun

Comp Squat
225 x 2

Comp Bench
245 x 1
250 x 1 @ 10

Comp Deadlift
225 x 1,1

Triceps Pushdown
Single Arm
28 x 14,9,4

Session Length
0:29

Notes
Just moving some weight around with squat and deadlift. Wanted to gauge where I was with bench. The 250 was slow, but went. It was definitely @10, and I may have had 255 in me. That's right around what I benched in May, so just treading water there. I think I just need much stronger triceps.

I've decided that after the meet, I'm going to cut through the end of the year, hopefully losing at least an inch off my umbilicus. Most days I'm at 35.5; I'll probably have to be around 185 for 34.5. As for programming, I'm going to keep doing the 8s, 2s, and 4s on MWF but with different exercises. I'm thinking of doing Leg Press, DB Bench, and SGDL as the main movements.

11/2/22 Wednesday [Training 118] Meet Week

AMBW & Umbilicus
192.8 & 35.5

Comp Squat
135 x 1 x 3

Comp Bench
135 x 1 x 3

Comp Deadlift
135 x 1 x 3

Overhead Triceps Cable Extension
Single Arm
22 x 6,6

Session Length
0:21

Notes
More Y bashing: today, in the chalk bowl, I found a bag—like a pitcher’s rosin bag—of white powder. I’m 99% sure it’s not magnesium carbonate. It was slippery in my fingers, but I don’t think it was baby powder. I don’t know…

:sighs:

My triceps are all twitchy from those overhead extensions.

Meet Day

Post by alek » Sat Nov 05, 2022 3:54 am

Slept okay.

Checked-in; equipment checked; got rack heights:
Squat - 15
Bench - 11, 6

Weighed-in: 87.0 kg

Squat 1: 180; 3 whites
Squat 2: 192.5; 3 reds, couldn’t lift it.
Squat 3: 192.5; 3 reds, couldn’t lift it.
Pretty disappointed. 192.5 would have been a state record.

Bench 1: 100; 3 whites
Bench 2: 110, 3 whites
Bench 3: 120, 3 reds, couldn’t lift it.
Yolo’ed for a pr.

Deadlift 1: 190, 3 whites
Deadlift 2: 200, 3 whites
Deadlift 3: 210, 3 whites
Meet PR. Very happy about this.

Total: 500

After watching the females compete yesterday, my wife has caught the barbell bug. We start her training on Tuesday, and she’s already picked out her own custom Pioneer belt…

See this thread for my programming moving forward:

I’m going to also re-re-restart conditioning and grip training, too.
