Yeah, that is my experience, too. Try to do the hip thing, with the inevitable result that the timing is off, that I lose tightness, and that the bar gets a couple inches in front of where it needs to be. No more.

Started adv novice for squats per my thread in the training/programming section

Wed. 21 Feb 2019
-------------------

S: 245x5x3 (~80% of 305)
BP: 180x4x2,2,2. <-- tried out different form on third set. it, uh, didn't work.
DL: 325x5

Fri. 23 Feb 2019
-------------------

S: 310x3,x5x3
OP: 130x5x2,4,1

Friday notes: I got about 6 hours of sleep last night courtesy of my upstairs neighbors, so I was fully expecting this to be a total wash. It was fine though. I wussed out on my first set of squats for, I guess, brain reasons, but then I got sufficiently mad that I got the remaining three sets.

OP: This was weird. On my first set, all my reps were fine until my last, which was a literal-7-second grinder. Second set was absolutely fine, and I could have done at least 1 more. Third set, I failed when the bar got out in front of me on the last set. About 15 seconds later, I did a single just to get in my 15. Probably going to try 132.5 next time.

Called it after this because it was taking forever and I was getting really hungry.

Greetings from a U of I alum! I assume you lift on campus? How are their gyms for lifting? I didn't start lifting until after I graduated and only ever went to ARC or CRCE for indoor soccer.

@denashes, hey there. I used to lift at the ARC way back when, but it is *so* crowded during the times that I went that I gave up on that and build a gym in my apartment. Only time you wouldn't have to wait for at least half an hour for a squat rack was at 6 am sharp, and sometimes even then you'd have to wait. In addition to that, it's full of gym-bro nonsense, so I kind of gave up on it. I will say, the racks are nice, if you can get them in a reasonable time. The pool there is pretty nice so I maintain my membership so I can swim regularly. If I ever get back to doing cardio more seriously, I'll probably be there more.

Sounds like a pretty standard university gym. Don't blame you one bit for setting up something at home.

Light squat day

S: 260x5x3
OP: 132.5x3x2,x2, 120x5x3

Didn't eat much food before working out which may explain the op thing, I think.

One of the good things about being on a campus that has a good ag program is that, occasionally, I get emails like this:

In addition to getting free pork here, I get a 10$ gift certificate at the (no shit) Illinois Meat Science Lab. So, I've got that going for me today. Which is nice.

Another U of I alumn checking in. Chicago for undergrad and UC for grad. I often miss Urbana.

Things are looking good in here.

Should probably start logging more frequently......

Got to 320, stalled. went back down to 295 and worked back up.

Today was awesome. I normally fuck around on my computer while lifting and am constantly distracted. Put it far enough away it was a pain to get to (I play music on it while lifting) and got to work. Today was really fast by my standards. Got everything done in ~1:20.

Got about 4 hours of on-again/off-agin sleep, so I didn't have it in me to train

Monday, 26 March, 2018
---------------------

After the lack of sleep on Friday, I've been dragging ass, mostly because I've been trying to come down with something. I think I was able to fight it off, but this and effects from not sleeping much last night either took a toll today

S: 325x5x2,0
BP: 180x5x2,3

Called it after this. Will try squats again Wednesday. I've had a good run the last week and a half prior to Friday, so I was wondering when it would stop, haha.

Actually getting 7.5 hours of sleep last night probably helped, lolz.

Okay. Squats are getting a tad heavy. Feeling like Giles Corey over here.

Good Friday, 30 March, 2018
-----------------------------

Squat: 330x5x3 [all time x5 pr, yay]
Bench: 180x5x3
Deadlift: 375x5 [matches x5 pr]

Lost balance on the first rep of the final squat set and thought I'd have to dump the bar, which would have been a bummer, buuuuut that didn't happen. Depending on how Monday feels, I will transition back to adv. novice for squats and also re-re-re-re-re-introduce cleans since they're kind of fun and deadlifting every workout has been a giant bummer haha.

Have been dealing with work stuff and also applying for jobs. Ugh. I've also been training but much of that is lost to time. I did, however, get a 405x5 deadlift on 25 April. So I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

I'm currently working on my squat, which meant a significant deload. I'm doing BBMs plug and play for the upper body lifts and adding a backoff set for deadlifts to keep the lower body strength going up. Kind of flying by the seat of my pants here.

CGBP: 150x8x2@8, x6@10, x5@10

also trying to lose some poundage. cooooooool.

Okay. Haven't updated this in forever because I haven't been lifting. Which is bad. BUT in the interim I've PRed two things.

1) private sector job offers
2) academic papers published.

and since I don't really brag on facebook, everyone here gets to see it.

I've been applying for jobs outside academia for the last month and have got some bites. Interviewed today at Oath, which is an offshoot of Yahoo acquired by Verizon, over in Champaign. Job is a data science job, so stats / machine learning/ programming / etc. The 4-part interview (over analytic stuff / machine learning / databases / scripting + "reverse engineering") was actually better than I expected, with the notable exception of me absolutely fucking up the mathematical stats part (which I was confident in) and forgetting everything I knew about regexps. This is particularly true since, until 4 days ago, I knew essentially nothing about ML or database shit. Anyway, given those things, I thought the interview went better than okay, but not great. They told me they'd let me know by next week. Well, sure as shit, got a call this afternoon two hours after the interview concluded from the head of data engineering who told me I had an offer. I am still kind of in shock.

And, with my foot out the door of the university, this got published: https://arxiv.org/abs/1805.08792

Hopefully back to training tomorrow.

Narrator: "he was not back to training tomorrow."

Been busy. Lifting occasionally, but not enough to consider it coherent training. New job, new place. Also an annoying habit of only getting like 5-6 hours of sleep per night for some reason that I cannot understand. Whatever.

Current plan is to do a modified LP until squats stall once w/ 5 lb jumps and then move onto either the bridge of HLM. None of this advanced novice stuff or whatever.

Modifications I'm making to LP: as has been stated repeatedly, SSNLP sucks for upper body lifts. I'm a pretty good example of this, with top 3x5 of OHP at a whopping 135 and bench of 185. I'm going to modify this from the get go by adding in bench sets at -~10% of the previous sessions 3x5 at the end of on OHP days and likewise for OHP on bench days. There are probably better ways to get volume (cough, plug and play), but I think it'll be good to get some additional volume now before I have to move on, and this seemed simple enough. I'll also add some backoff deadlift sets at some point soon.

My goal for the next few months is to conservatively lose some weight (get down to < 200 lbs, so I guess I won't be a real man) while keeping the weights going up slowly. My friend and I have a plan to enter a PL meet at some point next year, but we're not sure which one, so we'll see if that more nebulous goal comes to fruition.

Lifted in the evening. Got probably 3-4 hour of sleep the night before, so I was a little conservative.

Squat: 275x5x3 (belted)
OHP: 115x5x3 (belted)
Deadlift: 325x5
DL: 155x5x3
