Of course you have to mimic the PL movements as much as possible in your non-PL "general strength" program.

Re: 100 Starting Strength gyms in 5 years
Funny to see talk of the good morning. They're entirely absent from the SS NLP, for what that's worth. Though back raises are present, but along with chinups and powercleans are almost never actually performed, whatever the book says - the SSFGs don't even have a place to do back raises.
Good mornings do appear in the 12 week peaking programmes in PPST but they seem kind of an afterthought. They're not in the Barbell Logic NLP, either, it's just squat/bench/deadlift and squat/press/deadlift and then a light squat day and rows replacing deadlift in the middle of the week when all that gets hard. Like SS, they don't tell you (in their literature) when to stop the NLP, I presume they want to charge you for a coach for that.
Perhaps this is the reason people are focusing on the good morning?

@KyleSchuant I mean if you want to get better at low bar super bent over squat and deadlifts with high hips, and you deadlift 1 set every week, then you're going to need all of the lower back and glute strength that you can get. Good mornings sound good in that perspective.

Re: 100 Starting Strength gyms in 5 years
I suppose. It seems that the programming is like the coaching: create a problem, then in the next step fix the problem, then congratulate yourself on your coaching genius.
Like, put your hand on people's lower backs and tell them to drive their hips, their hips naturally come up first, then their knees slide back, and only then does the bar come up. Just in case that doesn't make it enough of a "hips first" movement, have them look down at the floor. Having created "knee slide", next session you work on knee slide. If you can't be bothered doing that then just let them slide their knees back for a month or two until they get hip flexor tendonitis then you can... I dunno what you do if you're an SSC, but anyway it keeps you busy.
Ah well, I guess some people never went through all of Alan Thrall's Fahve Stages.

I wonder how the SSFGs felt about Rip’s recent stunt on YouTube?

Re: 100 Starting Strength gyms in 5 years
I'm not willing to pay money to listen to a ranty shit-talking podcast when there are so many available for free, but I presume he was mocking the recent Australian ban on Nazi salutes, symbols and profit of sales of memorabilia. I'm Jewish, and my neighbourhood has recently been targeted with Nazi stuff, but I still think the ban is silly and counterproductive - and deserves to be mocked. I support free speech. "Kill all Jews!" is fine, but "Kill all Jews - a Jew lives here" as was recently painted on a letterbox around here is not. There's stupid and offensive speech, and then there's direct threats.
I think his using a toothbrush there is a small clue he's not serious, and anyone getting upset needs to calm down. I've no doubt some will use this opportunity to display their virtue, as they have previously done with BLM and transgender stuff.
This does not, of course, mean Rip is not being stupid here. But I think the basic problem is if you're in the fitness world, after a couple of years you've run out of new things to say, and at this point you either go for shirtless selfies on instagram, or you start putting up random unrelated bullshit. Let us be grateful Rip has chosen the latter.
Anyway, the video has been removed from BoobTube and from the SS website, likewise the self-indulgent sooking thread on the forum.

In the podcast he talks about laughing at men in mask at the grocery store during the pandemic. He said not one of them stepped up to him. This part of the podcast is extremely weird and I just can’t imagine this happening or only in certain cases. Like Mark snickers at someone from a distance and then tells everyone he laughed in their face.

whats lost on rip: is our society has decayed (people like him are a prime example, but the nazi omage thing he's doing is not what I'm talking about) to the point where we have to legislate/police language, pics, etc quite a bit because people are more turdy now than ever.... and "infringe" on the 1st amendment a tad more now (AUS is not 'merica BTW, rip).KyleSchuant wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 5:17 pm I'm not willing to pay money to listen to a ranty shit-talking podcast when there are so many available for free, but I presume he was mocking the recent Australian ban on Nazi salutes, symbols and profit of sales of memorabilia. I still can't rent a billboard out and put a pic of a gal spread eagle showing her bare cooch; I don't have a problem legislating stuff like Kyle describes out of society. Porn, the n-word (in most contexts), etc is no different.

I guess he means "not one of them stepped up to him" as in a confrontational context? But I don't think this means what he think it means.....Seafoam wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2024 2:39 am In the podcast he talks about laughing at men in mask at the grocery store during the pandemic. But if you've seen rip.... constantly snorting, clearing his throat, gurgling, breathing hard just walking around, 'rubbing' his nose, rolling boogers in between his fingers and thumb, etc....
.... I too ain't getting within germ-shot of that type of person during a covid pandemic.

Yeah, I wouldn't believe it either. It's like when you talk about giving money to beggars, there's always someone who says, "I don't give cash, but I do offer them a meal, and every time they've said no." And then you press them for details of when this last happened, and where, etc, and they get vague and evasive.
We're all the heroes of our own story. Sometimes simply presenting the best half of our lives and omitting the other half is enough for this, other times we have to... let's be nice and say, "embellish more." I guess the Lift Shoot Fight seminars are part of this play-acting.

It always amused me that people assume that, if you are homeless, the only possible way you could use money is to buy food. Like humans have no other primary needs besides eating ? It's kind of silly.KyleSchuant wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 12:00 amYeah, I wouldn't believe it either. I actually did a version of this once.KyleSchuant wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 12:00 am Yeah, I wouldn't believe it either. A young homeless couple on the freeway offramp in the winter here. Real skinny. Wife wanted to give them money; I said no .... I said, "there is a chilpotle right there and I need to eat anyways, we can get them a bunch of takeout after I eat, and hand it to them if you want. After all, their sign said something about '....hungry' "
Which we did. We watched and they put all the food in a duffle bag and did not immediately eat it. The boy went back to standing there holding the sign. The female remained seated, sitting indianstyle in the gravel. The emaciated dog remained seated. Evidentally, they were not that hungry at the time, OR the priority was working the traffic for money or something. I mean, it WAS "hot" food.
I'm guessing they ate it later, or, sold it to another homeless person, and then bought some more drugs/alcohol.

true. homeless people need gas money for their cars and to pay smart phone bills. times have changed !CheekiBreekiFitness wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 1:05 amIt always amused me that people assume that, if you are homeless, the only possible way you could use money is to buy food. but by only giving food (or here in phoenix, water/sports-drinks) you can assume, in good conscious, you are keeping them alive while not giving them money to continue abusing themselves if that's the case.

At the risk of derailing a 200-page thread about a fermented lump of mange and his muppet followers even further, I'd like to point out that:mbasic wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 7:11 amtrue. homeless people need gas money for their cars and to pay smart phone bills. times have changed !CheekiBreekiFitness wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 1:05 amIt always amused me that people assume that, if you are homeless, the only possible way you could use money is to buy food. a) You can be homeless and have access to -- or own -- a vehicle. There's no law that I know of which states otherwise.
b) You can have/own a smartphone and be homeless. Being homeless would not automatically disqualify one from a need for internet access or contact with other people/entities. Especially if you're working and homeless. This is why programs exist for reduced-cost phone access.
c) Both of those resources would be wildly useful assets for homeless people, much like a cheap gym membership where you have temporary shelter from the elements, and a place to wash your ass or eat well on pizza nights.
d) There are plenty of other needs that require money besides food -- though I suppose it could be debated whether (temporary) shelter, dry socks, clean underwear, hygiene products, and/or over-the-counter medicine are "primary needs." Voluntary hardships and whatnot. Maybe the handouts should be saved up for a pair of bootstraps instead.
...
Anyway, are there any genuine surprises left when it comes to that splotchy, drunken old troll of a coach? Who didn't see these swerves coming ten years ago?

I believe there are several homeless people (living out of their cars) that have memberships at my commercial gym.
But that's kind of misleading because it's $10/month for free showers, water, lockers, toilets and toilet paper. So pretty sensible. I think you're supposed to need a bank account though.

Basically like a super old school YMCA, but without the Jesus and cheap rooms.dw wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 3:45 pm I believe there are several homeless people (living out of their cars) that have memberships at my commercial gym.

I’ve been to a few major cities in the past year. It was common for homeless people to have cel phones.Renascent wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 9:01 amAt the risk of derailing a 200-page thread about a fermented lump of mange and his muppet followers even further, I'd like to point out that:mbasic wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 7:11 amtrue. homeless people need gas money for their cars and to pay smart phone bills. times have changed !CheekiBreekiFitness wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2024 1:05 amIt always amused me that people assume that, if you are homeless, the only possible way you could use money is to buy food. A week ago I saw a women in a bus stop late at night, after buses had stopped running, smoking a cigarette while she watched her phone. Looked like it sucked. I’m not going to begrudge her the cigarette or the phone, both probably made living outside slightly more tolerable.
