Re: Collars
I've never had a problem deadlifting with crappy plates using spring collars. I have Proloc collars for my DB, farmers handles, and EZ bar, though.KOTJ wrote:Best value collars?
Scenario: plate hole diameter allows plates to tilt during reps. Want collars that will then snug against the bar
Do not want comp collars , or anything weighing more than 2lb. Price under $60 hopefully.

Re: Collars
Never used them, but Rogue's Oso Elite are "exactly" 1lb and less than 60 US$.

Re: Collars
I have cheapo plastic lever collars from Amazon, they work fine for holding iron plates steady when deadlifting. Cost about $10.
I like them better than spring-clamp collars. Dunno if they are sturdy enough for heavy cleans dropped from overhead with bumpers, I don't do that.

Oso collars are great. I have 2 pair and the high usage ones are still going strong.Murelli wrote:Never used them, but Rogue's Oso Elite are "exactly" 1lb and less than 60 US$.

I use the plastic lock jaw collars I got for free from Rogue. They work fine.

Re: Collars
The better the plates fit the bar, the less important collars are. If the plates are tilting, they can apply leverage against the collars. York spin locks would be the best, but they're 2.5kg each. Since you're averse to comp collars, get something by OSO. The actual name brand is better than the knock offs.

Was thinking I might end up with 2.5kg collars and just use a pair of 35s when I pull.Cody wrote:The better the plates fit the bar, the less important collars are. OSO collars are wonderful. The OSO pro collars are on sale at Rogue for $40 right now. They weigh 1 pound for the pair. Get them, they are awesome.

Re: Collars
the question is, are they $30+shipping better than a pair of lockjaw collars from Amazon? I'm not being pedantic, serious question here. How much better are "midrange collars" vs cheapos? I can understand heavy, spinlock competition collars being the best, with a commensurate increase in cost. But is it worth spending "a little more" on something else compared to cheap collars?

Yes they are better than lockjaw style collars. Much better.
Don’t buy the Oso knockoffs though. They are not as secure.

You can always double up with 2 spring collars per side. I've done that before when I was stuck training in shitty gym.

Re: Collars
I've used the Kabuki branded OSO knockoff collars. They were shit. Fell part, didn't grip well, 2 out of 4 didn't close or lock open right. Cheap ass lockjaw knockoffs worked way better.
Which makes me wonder, anyone compared legitimate lockjaws and knockoff lockjaws? Is there much difference? What about the newer lockjaw designs?
Hamburger, that makes me wonder if doubled lockjaws might work well...

I have plastic Rogue Lockjaw collars, Lockjaw Hex collars ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FH ... UTF8&psc=1 ), and cheapo spring collars.
They all suck for deadlifting. I use Pendlay bumpers and cheap CAP plates with shitty tolerances. After each set, I have to re-adjust the plates and re-tighten the collars.

Re: Collars
What kind of bar? I'm starting to wonder if my spring collar experience (cheapo plates that flop all over, don't move at all once I have a spring collar on) is because the sleeve of my bar is "grippier" for the springs.gtl wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2017 5:52 am I have plastic Rogue Lockjaw collars, Lockjaw Hex collars ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FH ... Re: Collars
Looked again at my collars, I have the old plastic Rogue Lockjaw model. Works fine for deadlifts using sloppy iron plates on a B&R bar. About 5 years old now.

Re: Collars
Ya'll beat me to it, but ya, the OSOs are great. I've been Olympic lifting with them and dropping shit all over the place, they don't budge. Also older, beat up ones at the gym I went to for a bit held up well. I have the Elites for the exact reason Murelli mentioned above. Now I can use a 20 kg bar and have a 5 lb increment still instead of being 1 lb off.
