Only through volume 1 (Episode 5)

I have read that Volume 1: Preludes and Nocturnes is the hardest to translate to TV. It is also considered the weakest installment of Sandman as Sandman really starts to hit its stride in Volume 2.
SpoilerShow
You thought they did a good job with Corinthian?
He should be more creepy and unhinged.
The trip to hell was well done?
It was just okay. Weakest parts: Lucifer going head-to-head with Morphius. Lucifer would win that. Having Matthew bail Morpheus out was a bad choice. Morpheus does not accept help nor need it.
The placing wasn't too slow?
Seems okay to me.
My biggest complaints so far:
is they sanitized the show too much. Morpheus is much more dark and uncaring in the comic.

Strong assessment. I agree with dark/uncaring 1,000%.

Also, I read the comics decades ago, but I thought early on (in the comic) we got to see Corinthian at the Cereal convention. That would have been cool to see in the show.

As a big fan of the original I think I will struggle with some of the "presentation" for at least the first few seasons or so (hopefully we get that far) but, yeah, overall I think it does do a decent job what with needing to be understandable to newcomers and all...

Started watching it a few nights ago; I'm not sure how many episodes in, but he
SpoilerShow
just got his sand and is on his way to hell.

So far, I think the sandman himself is the weakest part of the show. The humans are more interesting, yet I'm surprised they're so afraid of him. He just seems to brood.

Tell me he actually does something.
I've never read any of the original work.

I have 2 episodes left. Show definitely picked up since my original assessment.

Spoiler warning:

To me, in the comics, Dream seemed like a bad MF. That comes across much less in the tv show. Like when Dream leaves Nala in hell? That was a much different moment, where Dream came across much more callous, than in the TV show.
I'd echo that for almost everything Dream does in the show.

At the same time, I am definitely entertained. And some of the things I liked most about the comics may just not translate to TV. (Like how unapologetically creepy Corinthian is, especially in the comics when Corinthian explained to Matthew that his form was his function, that he was designed to be a serial killer so he had to be a serial killer.)

I've really gotten into Black Mirror the past few days. It's an anthology series much like AHS though it differs between episodes rather than series.

It reminds me a lot of the Twilight Zone meets Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams. A lot of episode themes centre around a dystopian society and/ or the adverse impact of an over reliance on a certain type of near future technology and its impact on the person's behaviour/ mental state and their friends/ family.

I'm sure it's been discussed here before but the quality of the writing of this show always staggers me a little. It remind me of Inside #9.

I wouldn't say I prefer British TV to American but there is a sophistication to the writing at least of the former that you rarely if ever find here.

Giving a shout out for Event Horizon! A 25th edition restored 4K was released August 9th. Get some poor unsuspecting sole to watch it with you then enjoy as it freaks them the fuck out.

Thanks for the heads up! Great movie.

Also, the Grey Man was a shit movie. Massively disappointing given the supposed talent involved.

My treadmill movie tonight. It served its purpose, but I turned it off once the run was done. I assume the good guy wins?

One of my all time favorites and the idea that there is a forever lost directors cut out there with more evil will never not bother me.

Yes, of course. And there is sufficient room for a terrible sequel to follow, provided enough interest. Hopefully, there isn’t.

Event Horizon was pre-internet. The previews did not disclose anything. One minute you are watching pretty standard sci-fi fare and then 💥…Hellraiser. Being caught off guard was essential to the experience. You just don’t get that anymore. We have collectively lost something.

Anderson said the studio only viewed dailies from his main crew. Which shot all of the mainstream scenes. He shot the horror elements with the 2nd crew and primarily on the weekends. The studio didn’t even know until they saw his first cut

Once the fun and luster of seeing some of my favorite comic characters get some movie justice wore off (it really has now) I'm left with this disappointed sadness of just how bad of a place film seems to be in right now.

I've got my fingers crossed pretty hard for this Cabinet of Curiosities Guillermo del Toro is doing with Netflix in October... 4 nights of double features, I'm assuming either produced by or curated by del Toro but I usually like just about whatever he puts his name on...

You mean a world where it costs $350M to make and market a film and the film needs to gross $800M to break even?

Old School is on Netflix. It’s a dumb (but entertaining, imo) film that has more subtlety than what’s coming out now.

I was having a conversation with my kids about some of these more recent cartoons that are kid appropriate. Lots of them have story arcs over several episodes. I think that’s kinda cool as compared to the shit I grew up on where every episode was self-contained.

For series, like Stranger Things, I can endure the episodic, long-plot-arc format simply because I can compact the viewing into a tight schedule.

However, for theatrical cinema, they can get bent with the continuing plot sprawl that is subsuming everyone. Just write semi-interesting self-contained films.

But… I think it was one of the Freakonomics books that talked about Hollywood studios not really knowing how to predict how well a film would do once released, even with focus groups and whatnot. So they mitigate risk by churning on stuff that has a guaranteed audience.

Nevertheless, with this dystopian present of sequels spawning at a factorial rate, movies are getting too long, talent seems to be growing thin (specifically in regards to editing), and time is finite.

To romanticize the past a bit more, it was kinda fun not knowing how big the summer movies would be. As an example, here’s the 1985 summer list:

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/season/summer/1985/

Then compare to 1986:

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/season/summer/1986/

Some huge winners and some awful losers, but a damn good bit of variety.

I’ll stop complaining now and go back to watching Knight Rider and various anime.

House of Dragons was gut wrenching to watch. I mean, aside from all the self loathing for signing up for HBO Max at the last minute just to watch.

No,I actually thought the show was quite good. I'd forgotten just how graphic GoT was. Some scenes were really hard to watch, emotionally as well.

I'm expecting crap but hoping for gold and after the first episode still feel like it could go either way.

There was some entertaining carnage but also a few scenes that seemed emotionally gut-wrenching or graphically violent just for the sake of "trauma porn" that I didn't really care for.

That describes it almost perfectly.
