So much yes. I’ve always found curls to be miserable in every form. I’m weak at them and find everything about them uncomfortable, without the satisfaction that comes from being uncomfortable, say, squatting.

That said, I’m currently treating straight bar curls as a main movement and have found that there’s a significant difference in opening a session with them, not just in strength (duh) but in them seeming much less like a drag when I haven’t done three or four other things first.

Bulgarian split squat 16x10x2

I didn't film the squats, but I don't think I did anything bad. It's nice to start squatting a little weight again, but I'm still paranoid about the weak link in the low back/hips and don't want to push it.

I was reminded yesterday of the bracing cue, “pull your belt buckle to your chin,” and used it today - much easier / better than separately thinking of squeezing quads, glutes, and abs. Give it a try. My personal (so massive grain of salt) addition to the cue is to think of it more as pulling your belt buckle up and through you to your chin, rather than letting it end up being too much of a rounding movement / standing crunch.

Yesterday was a day off from lifting, so what did I do? Why, BJJ, because I was so bored of being rested and uninjured!!!! I thought I was taking it so easy and using so much wisdom, but as soon as I cooled down I was sore and crippled. I did something bad to my foot, somewhere near my arthritic big toe, while warming up, which SEEMED fine to ignore, but later started to hurt more and swell up. Also I lost some skin off my knuckles from trying to play spider guard without remembering any techniques except "hang on and try not to get passed", but that is the smallest of my problems right now. I am eating ibuprofen and feeling sorry for myself.

Never mind. Everything is okay. I did my best to nocebo myself, but 24 hours after rolling I was basically fine again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Some of these amraps and RPEs don't make sense, but whatever. Still getting a feel for the definition of failure on stuff like lat raises and leg extensions where I'm eyeballing the angles to see if I completed the full ROM.

Almost as much as curls, I hate training calves. I already have calves so giant that I can't wear high boots. They don't look big compared to my thighs, but they are. Perhaps soon I will replace calf work with shrugs or neck curls or something relevant to grappling.

Yup, fuck em. I don’t have giant calves, but they’ve got good aesthetics that easily are raised with a week of jump roping or sled pushing. There’s not enough time in the day to justify turning good into great when there are so many other (more productive and fun) gym things to do, especially since nearly all calf work fucks my knees.

On Sunday I went whitewater rafting, which was INCREDIBLY FUN AND BEAUTIFUL and I didn't even break any bones. There was a little bit of paddling, which could excuse my underwhelming rows the next day.

overhead tricep machine RP 90x15*,5*,3*
db spider curl 25x15,8*,6*

Right after that, I went for a six-mile hike, which is about five miles longer than any walk I've taken in at least a year. I was pleased that my upper leg muscles had no problem, but I could tell my calves were getting exhausted (no cushion in my shoes). Indeed, my feet and calves were Real Sore the next day, so I took a day off. Also my lower back hurt for some reason, although not in the same place as the injury I'm coddling.

This was all fine, at least after my calves warmed up and stopped killing me.

Felt weak and sad, the SSB squats seemingly worse than last week. I am not loving SSB squats; I feel like I'm driving my neck into the bar in order to keep my chest up during the ascent. Might switch to front squats soon.

Played with reverse hyperextensions but didn't like how they felt on the lower back. Weirdly bad performance today compared to last week; maybe still recovering from 3 hours of sleep Saturday night

Real squats! This is the most I have squatted for 10 since I did 207x10 in July 2021. These ones today were at like maybe @7, too. Love to see it.

week 5 here is going to be the last before I take a few days off to go camping. I might change it up when I get back.

Logged the same thing within the past week. Felt them entirely in my lower back and not in a good way, and not at all in my hams and glutes. Had a far better experience with back extensions, doing them while in slight, braced flexion both up and down.

Congrats on the real squats! Seems like good things are ahead.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say so but I tried them out because you mentioned them. I was doing them unweighted and didn't feel much of anything except for, on one downswing, a big uh-oh jolt radiating from my lower back. So that was a no from me, boss. Too bad, because I thought it would be nice to get the lower back a little traction and a little loaded flexion/extension to help it realize everything is okay.

I ended up taking a break for almost three weeks. First I was camping, then I got the flu, then I just felt vaguely bad and didn't lift for a week or so. Finally I dragged myself back to the gym, where I realized again, for the nth time, like a little goldfish who doesn't have long-term memory, that not lifting makes me mildly depressed and this condition is curable by lifting.

I started back with an upper body day (bench press, seated db press, barbell rows, lat pulldown, skullcrushers) and then a squat day where I went back to low-bar squatting for the first time since last year.

Low bar squats feel so great. Everything just feels tight and pulled-together and unable to move except in the correct way. I don't know why a couple inches' difference in bar placement should feel like a completely different lift. Maybe it's just that I learned to squat low-bar in the first place and only really started high-bar squatting in 2020 when I joined the weightlifting gym. Also I have really long legs and a short torso, so low bar is a helpful accommodation for my handicap.

Welcome back - glad to see you.

Further to the thread upstairs… yeah… turns out that I never had really squatted low bar until today, despite thinking that I had been for many years. I think it felt good? Forgot to look down and that led to more extension that I now care for, despite my efforts to keep my hips pulled under. Glass half full, now that I know that my lifetime PR actually was high
bar (even if a low high bar), I’m now hopeful of what I actually may be capable.

Settling in to a new setup following comeback. I accidentally got my week reversed so I'm doing presses and deadlifts first, bench and squat second, but I don't think it matters.

This week:

* 2023-07-31
press 85x9@10 85x7@10
isolateral lpd RP 110x13*,7*,5*
incline press 105x10@10 105x10@9
Sir Charles delt raise RP 10x10,8*,8*
cable tricep pushdown RP 150x15,8*,6*

* 2023-08-01
deadlift 225x5 255x5 265x5 270x5@8
face pulls 50x15x3
front squat 45x8 65x8 85x8@ezpz
leg extension RP 135x15,11*,7*

* 2023-08-03
bench press 130x6@8 130x7@9
lpd wide RP 150x10*,6*,5*
machine overhead press RP 105x13*,9*,6*
skullcrushers 60x10x4
db curl 20x12 25x10,8

* 2023-08-04
low bar squat 95x5 135x5 155x5 175x5x2
bb rows 125x8x3
lying leg curls RP 45x15,10*,7*
kb farmer's carry straps 70x2:00x2

I like low bar squatting and am experiencing a temptation to care about it. In 2018, after rehabbing a strained adductor, when I weighed 248 lb, I LPed my low bar squat up to 260x5x3, and this knowledge haunts me. That's not the goal though! The goal is huge (i.e. less tiny) upper body and the same or fewer dump trucks, and not to be so tired from lifting that I don't want to go for a walk or roll around on the ground. Meh!

On 8/3 I meant to do seated dumbbell presses, but I couldn't find the dumbbells I wanted, so I used a machine instead and did it rest-pause style. That felt surprisingly good, was easy to go to failure, and produced extra triceps soreness.

Sir Charles delt raises look dorky but they feel pretty good and make it easier to find failure, because there isn't upward momentum during the hard part.

Reversed the week and tested squat, front squat, and deadlift singles so as to go forward with an organized 5-3-1 type thing for the next few weeks. Keeping the brotastic upper body days.

Back squat: 245 was not extremely beautiful. I descended too slowly, and there was a weird hitch/pause in the middle of the descent where I flinched from my left knee, which has a touch of IT band unhappiness or something, and likes to hurt briefly at the equinoxes of the squat (a term I just invented for the middles of the ascent and descent, the bottom and the top positions being the solstices). Then the ascent threatened to be a good-morning but I pretty much successfully fought to keep my chest up. It looked better than it felt. And I didn't hurt myself!

Front squat: it was fun to do these out of a squat stand, on a platform, in kilos, like old times, and to dump 80 kg with majestic agility when my upper back fell apart.

Deadlift: 335 was smooth but slow, so I called it.

I have yoinked this squat and deadlift programming from the SBS 28 free programs. It is a quick four-week cycle so I get to retest maxes pretty soon.

I started using a belt again for back squats and deadlifts, and now I have pain again in the lower left back ribs. (Unrelated to the right SI joint thing, which has been quiet alhamdulillah.) Could be that the belt is too tight. I do love wearing a belt so tight that my guts are trying to climb out over the top of it. But I am easing back a couple notches now to try to mollify my ribs, as they are the only thing hurting outside the gym right now (!).

Most Many people probably have the belt on a little bit too tight. Maybe. There's at least two conflicting views out there on how tight the belt should be. Both of them might be "right" , depending.

It feels good during the lift. I can make up a story about how it helps proprioception / reinforces keeping immobile the things that ought to be immobile, but I don't really know, because what it feels like is "Belt Friend is here to help and everything is going to be fine". Maybe I'll do the next cycle beltless, would probably build character to reduce psych dependence on Belt Friend.
