Exodus Strength

Gonna try to watch 31 horror movies, one for each day of October. Stupid Idea? Yup. Is this the pumpkin spice latte of challenges? Sure. Should I swap the movies for pendlay rows? OK.

What are your favorites? Bonus points for things on Netflix, Prime, or Hulu, I have those. But post your obscure loves too.
Last year I focused on Hammer films, the year before I watched a bunch of giallo. This year I want to step out of my own head. Hence asking for advice.

@aurelius mentioned it already elsewhere (I think?) though seemingly they've digitally remastered Event Horizon.

Childhood favourite for sci-fi horror. Not sure what platform it's on though.

I think A24 does the best contemporary stuff. Hereditary, The VVitch, It Comes at Night, etc.

The Shining is an all time favorite. The Herzog Nosferatu is as well, although I’m not sure that strictly qualifies as a horror movie.

Event Horizon is baller - a true classic.
I haven’t seen It comes at night yet - that one is on the list.
I saw Shadow of the Vampire when I went on a big Werner Herzog kick in college. I still have the dvd I think. That one might be due for a rewatch.


I have a bit of a list going now - I’m kind of excited that Timo Tjahjanto has movies out - his scenes from V/H/S and ABCs of death were pretty sick. Has anybody seen May the Devil take you?

I also have never seen Pumpkinhead or Candyman.

It Follows. I think it is still on Netflix.

I'll have to do some perusing to put together a more comprehensive list that isn't the obvious classics...

Watch Trick r' Treat as you get closer to the 31st, or watch it on the 31st... it's our family's Christmas Story... ya know, for Halloween...

Some old school ones I like: Night of the Demon (1957) (not to be confused with Night of the Demons, a really bad 80’s zombie flick) and Dead of Night (1945), a classic omnibus horror film; pretty sure the latter has the first appearance of an evil
ventriloquist’s dummy in a film : ) Neither is very scary, but neither are the Hammer films, just kind of creepy.

The Criterion Channel has an 80s horror series this month that looks interesting. This Fulci movie in the series looks deliciously trashy:

Watched The Empty Man (I think HBO Max) the other night...it was interesting.

Gotta love the old hammer horrors as you mentioned, the witch finder general was a classic, aside from hammer, Crimson peak's a very stylish gothic horror, The original Wicker man's good too, the Nicholas cage remake's ok but stick with the original, I enjoyed Apostle on Netflix (uk) and the Witch

Maybe not strictly a horror, at least not a supernatural type but Straw dogs Original or remake both good!

I still think about Haunting of Hill House, which I can't say for many horror movies. A series, obv, but instead of watching something new I might actually re-watch that this year.

I obviously haven't sat down and done a comprehensive list to helpfully contribute, but just be on notice that the new Halloween comes out in two days on Peacock (?). I actually really liked the 2018 Halloween... Halloween Kills was kind of a miss but watchable...

Late to the thread, but this one popped into my head out of the blue after not thinking about it in years.

Death Line (AKA "Raw Meat") from 1972, which I originally randomly caught on TCM Underground (which is a funny coincidence, now that I think about it) around 2008. It's about a family of cannibals who've been living under the London Underground for generations. The only words they know are "mind the doors," which they use to communicate in an "I am Groot" fashion. I remember it being better than I expected, and this one long shot is when I realized it was going to be interesting:

Others off the top of my head that I didn't see mentioned:

The Mist - Directed by long-time Stephen King collaborator Frank Darabont (Shawshank, Green Mile). Uses the old "the humans are the real monsters" trope, but still really well done. Gave this one a rewatch the other day, and while the CGI isn't the best, it still holds up pretty well. On Netflix.

Possession - The mention of Event Horizon reminded me of this, since it features a young Sam Neill, though probably more well known for Isabelle Adjani's performance. Probably hard to find, at least in digital form, but worth seeking out if you're into cult horror classics.

Wolf Creek is probably the only horror movie I found actually scary (nothing supernatural).
The Wolf Creek TV show is a little ridiculous, but a lot of fun, more like a video game.
