Would you also need to buy a special collar to hold the chains?
Or do the chains just stay in place?
You could buy a collar, or just loop the chain around and secure it to itself with a carabiner. When I have used chains in the past we had a loop of smaller chain with a big carabiner on it.

I don’t know I’ve never used chains. Doing research (googling) you need a special collar or really a leader chain, as mentioned. I am going to give these daisy chain hammock straps a try to use in place of a leader chain. Thinking these straps won’t be able to scratch my bar, the straps have plenty of loops for adjusting the height, and they cost $8.00 a pair.

That's kind of what I use. Mine is Black Diamond though.

Those should be just fine.

Couldn’t you just use paracord/whatever rope you have lying around?

I bet that would work. Also got my 8 dollar straps in and the loops fit the bar sleeves pretty ok.
