With your meet right around the corner, will you start the HIIT before or after that?

11/29/17

Bench 172.5x5x2, 172.5x8, 205x2 paused

Curl 57.5x12, 50x13

Deadlift 350x6, 415x1

Neck extension 18.75x25, 17.5x25, 16.25x25, 15x25

Treadmill
Ran for 1 minute, 16 seconds at a 10mph pace before flying off the treadmill. I immediately decided to never run on the treadmill again.

Jump rope
5 minutes of astonishingly bad jump roping. Somehow, this is far harder than it was when I was 8.

Notes
- The limiting factor in my deadlifts today was a combination of being totally out of breath and an apparent lack of intestinal fortitude.
- 350x6 is still technically a PR, though.

Before it. I'm about 200lbs away from setting a state record in any lift, so it really doesn't matter if I'm a little worn out for the meet. My job will have me camping out in the bush for three days before the meet, anyway, so my chance for ideal meet conditions already vanished.

12/3/17

Press 115x5x2, 115x8

Chin 7.5x6, bwx5

Squat 325x5x3

Neck extension 20x25, 17.5x25, 15x25, 12.5x25

Notes
- After today's fiasco on squats I decided not to take out any heavy singles
- I'm cutting down on workout time by limiting rest times for the neck harness work. It's basically a drop set at this point.
- Just started The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton. This one's the autobiography of a guy who converts to Catholicism and becomes a monk. Odd reading material for someone who left Catholicism for good, but I'm enjoying it so far.

12/5/17

Bench 175x5x2, 175x8, 210x2 paused

EZ curl 60x8, 50x7

Deadlift 355x7, 420x1

Neck harness 21.25x25, 18.75x25, 16.25x75, 13.75

Notes
- I'm about to spend a few nights on a small, uninhabited island for work. Pretty stoked.
- Speaking of work, for several months I've been hearing that our duty schedule is about to get way more intense. It continues to not happen. Moral of the story? Listen to no one.
- 210x2 on bench was the heaviest weight I've benched. A legit PR, not an "I've never done this many reps before" PR like I've been setting daily for the last few weeks.
- The bar nearly slipped out of my hands on the last set of deadlifts. I need a stronger grip. Or straps. We'll see.

Got back this morning after being stuck out in the bush for two extra nights. The weather wouldn't permit the seaplane to pick us up on time. So I missed the meet. C'est la vie.

Focusing on proper nutrition and sleep today then I'll lift tomorrow.

12/11/17

Press 117.5x5x2, 117.5x8

Chin 10x7, bwx6

Squat 330x5x2, 330x7

Neck extension 22.5x25, 20x25, 17.5x14, 12.5x25

Notes
- I had been having trouble with going forward in the squat but they went really well today.
- It would have been difficult to put the camera in a worse position for presses. Oh well.
- Pretty stoked about adding a rep and 2.5lbs to my chin-ups. Still not a PR, but getting close.
- Waist is down 1" and I've lost four lbs since starting this log.
- At BJJ practice last night, I let out the most embarrassing fart of my adult life while performing a triangle choke. My training partner may take several years to recover. As for me, I learned a valuable lesson about eating beans on a day I'll be on the mats.

Yes, it's difficult to think of a worse time for it.

12/13/17

Bench 177.5x5x2, 177.5x8

Curl 60x12, 55x11

Deadlift 360x4, 360x1x3

Neck harness 25x22, 20x16

Notes:
- Never noticed it before but I'm staggering my legs on bench.
- I thought I ran out of deadlifts at the end of that set, but watching the video it's painfully obvious that I ran out of intestinal fortitude instead. If I can keep the coals of self-loathing burning for an entire week, I might get ten reps with this weight on the next go.
- Played around with straps for a couple singles for deads after the workset. After several minutes of watching me unsuccessfully fiddling around with the straps, a bodybuilder friend of mine walked up and showed me how to wear them properly.

Watching Raw Nats, Worlds, and European Championships, i noticed a lot of lifters have a stagger on bench.

That's hilarious. Let's call it Onara Gatame? I'm a lifetime Judoka, and I've heard that BJJ allows many things we can't do (wrist locks? leg entanglements? neck cranks?) - maybe that was a legal move after all.

12/15/17

Bench 135x3, 225x1

Press 120x5x2, 120x9

Hammer chins 12.5x6, bwx6

Squat 335x5x2, 335x7

Notes:
- 15lb bench PR! Did not intend to bench at this workout, but then my buddy did a PR 225lb bench press, so of course I had to get in on the action.
- John Sheaffer is doing a personal training thingy called Team Pain starting Jan 1 and going for 12 weeks. I signed up.

I've been training for a year and I actually have yet to hear anything about rules.

12/18/17

Bench 180x5x2, 180x7
Hammer curl 25x12, 24x10
Squat 340x5x2, 340x6

Notes:
- Lifted at Matt Bruce’s gym in Baton Rouge today. Trying to find the 45s in a sea of communist plates was tough, but the staff was helped me out. Cool place. Infinitely better than the awkwardness of bringing my own chalk to the YMCA and being a public spectacle when I squat over 185lbs.

Chin 15x6, bwx4
Deadlift 325x3, decided I hate hookgrip, put on straps, and did another 6 reps. I’d call this rest-pause except it took me at least a minute to get the straps right.

I had the chance to triangle a partner who was way better than me once, but I knew if I went for it I was going to fart on him. So I didn't go for it. Then the motherfucker got me in an Ezekiel choke. And it was a Nogi ezekiel, which I personally have never pulled off.

I never again even came close to submitting him.

I live with that regret every day.

You're a better than me. I salute you.

12/27/17

Bench 182.5x5, 182.5x4, 182.5x3
Squat 345x2

Notes
- Complete fiasco. Not a huge surprise after living off of gingerbread cookies for a week.
- Taught a friend how to squat, and she managed 55lbs for sets of five with pretty good form. I told her to do it two or three times a week and add 5lbs every time. If she does take this advice, then I can say I did something of value this year. Fingers crossed.

12/29/17

Press 125x5x2, 125x7

Chin 17.5x5, bwx6

Deadlift 330x10

Notes
- My spine somehow remained intact after the hideous deadlift set you just witnessed. I did, however, nearly pass out afterwards. Ended up sitting down and leaning forward with my head between my knees while my gym owner looked on in a mixture of amusement and pity.
- I'm thinking about switching to flats for deadlifts. And ditching the belt. We shall see.
- I have made a full switch to straps for deads, at John Sheaffer's recommendation.
- I feel like I ought to mention something other than deadlifts, but nothing else is coming to mind.

1/1/17

Bodyweight work
Hammer chins (1,2,3)x3
Pushups 15x2

Weights:
Bench 165x5x2, 165x9
Curl 60x14, 50x6
Squat 320x5x2, 320x7

Notes:
- Kinda sick, don't know if it's just from last nights festivities or something more serious yet.
- Wore flats for everything today, didn't seem to change much. Should've gotten video.
- Put my feet way under me and got more of an arch on bench.
- I got a girlfriend while I was on leave, and now she snapchats me every single day. I asked my friends if this is normal. Apparently so.
- In an effort to improve my consistency, I'm logging all my cardio and bodyweight work now
- The gym was way too crowded. All these people doing their new years resolutions, I suppose. Hopefully they quit.
- I had trouble hearing after the squats. This happened after deadlifts, too, on Friday. I don't know what that means, but it seems odd.
