Lat Prayers
I was surprised by these. 15-20 years ago these were a made-up exercise by gym-tards, (the exercise didn't even have a name) and when I saw people do them I thought they were fucken gay, and/or didn't know what they were doing.
There were some machines that did a similar movement .... I thought those worked well. But those machines were/are rare to see in a gym
More recently, (say last 4-9 years) they seem to have gotten a name, and are more it fashion.
You get a hella lat pump, and probably that one head of the triceps too.
If I do higher reps, 10-15 tpyically, but lets say 15 ... its a lot of lactate, burning, and breathing, weird, I almost get sick to my stomach.
I highly recommend you try them .... as a finisher thing of course, but even as your 2nd lat/row movement.
Thought I share ...

Re: Lat Prayers
I always knew these as straight arm pressdowns / pushdowns. Never did them because always seemed like a fourth or fifth choice but had no idea there was anything controversial about them.
That said, “regular” pushdowns have fallen out of ny rotation for no good reason, but I do them letting the bar / my arms come well up, to get that one tricep head as you say. Doing pushdowns (or conversely, curls) with “elbows attached to your sides” misses out on a lot of good stuff IMO.

Re: Lat Prayers
I like doing them single arm since I can play around with the angle more and get a stretch in the Lat easier. Also run into less balance issues, they start to feel kinda shitty when the weight gets a bit higher and you’re being pulled forward.
Also worth trying them with a loop around the wrist rather than holding on to a handle. I feel it less in the long head of the triceps and more focused on the lats that way.
Definitely prefer them to pullovers for lat isolation. I barely feel pullovers in my lats at all and my shoulders don’t enjoy them either.

Re: Lat Prayers
I always called those "cable pullovers".
Re: Lat Prayers
That muscle mommy with the barn door back seemed to be enjoying them quite a lot.

Re: Lat Prayers
I did something like this, but unilateral for a while, it was fine, but I found it pretty awkward to get a good stretch. Given all the lengthened partial hype I'd think pullovers with a dumbbell or bar would be a better choice.
If you go to youtube you can find throwers doing them super heavy.

Re: Lat Prayers
Never tried them but they seem perfectly reasonable to me. Isn't it the same as a dumbbell pullover?

Re: Lat Prayers
I tried these a couple years ago- the standing cable version.
I didn’t like the “force curve” and found I had to change my torso angle during the movement to accommodate.
Dumbbell pullovers seem way better.

Re: Lat Prayers
The science disagrees with you (and me)
Intuitively, lying dumbbell pullovers would seem to work better, as the lat is more stretched out while the load is working against gravity the most ....
Turns out DB pullovers are more of chest exercise.
I get hella pump out of lat prayers.
I do go to a globogym ; I have many different cable machine set ups.

Re: Lat Prayers
I was inspired by this thread and added them to my upper back work. Bro-ing out here: I really like the tension I get at the end of the movement. I feel like it really targets and area that doesn't get targeted by other movements.

Re: Lat Prayers
I think some of the effect I/we/you/Dr.Mike is feeling is kinda bullshit though.
Your triceps do get a solid pump out of the movement, the two heads are isometrically contracting keep the elbow straight/fixed; and then that third 'long' head is actually doing a bit of work shortening and stretching.....AND your triceps are definitely in contact externally with your lats there when you are standing at rest.... Lats which are no doubt getting pumped as well. So that general area "back there" is all burned up, pumped, swOlen, stiff, etc. .... it FEELS like the exercise is working really well. But is it actually doing anything better than a chin-up in terms of load, tension, or stretch? I hope so. I think so. But who really knows?
All that said, I still think its a good lat exercise. AFTER lat pulldown, certain rows, etc. A top tier secondary exercise as it were.
I never really felt much doing DB pullovers, the whole gravity force vector thing goes limp after 45 degrees or however one is to express that.
---------------
I think this is where people fell in love/fell into a trap with things like the hip thrust, or the hip aBduction machine (aka Bad Girl machine).
Sure you can really really get a nice burn or pump out of the exercise while working out, but it that neccessarliy the best way to make the muscle grow?
I really have never felt any kind of squat in my ass/glutes WHILE I was doing them, even higher rep LBBS (next day, DOMS? sure) ..... but I'm sure LBBS and RDLs are the best way to gro ur ass
----------------
Also, it was more of a post about exercises that I previously thought were "totally gay" back 15 years ago.
But see they have utility and are valid exercises to use..... funny, how things have "evolved".

Re: Lat Prayers
Just this morning I tried the glute ham raise at my gym for the first time. I thought, "Well this is easy." I didn't feel much of anything in my glutes or hamstrings but interestingly, I couldn't do very many reps. Now, sitting here 10 hours later, I can feel the soreness really start to set in. On the other hand when I use the leg curl machine I can feel it while I am doing it.mbasic wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2024 11:11 am
