I don't know why the heuristic of knees flush with forearms works, but it has been really useful for adjusting DL start positions since I first heard it from Thrall's video.
Just seems like this is an accident of "average anthropometry". I don't understand why this would be mechanically ideal.
I just checked a few of my heaviest pulls...my knees are well forward of my arm when the bar breaks off the floor.
Do you have any of those pulls posted here to look at?
Here:
Oh yeah, your knees are pretty far in front, and it looks like that knee extension is kinda combined with the slack pull? When your knees are lined up with your forearms on the way up, it looks to me like the outside plates are about to come off the ground. It kinda reminds me of Mike T's deadlift.

Pretty confident these are on some sort of deadlift bar (these were from over a year ago). I'll try some heavy singles on a stiff bar. I'd expect the "knees forward at break-off" to be even more exaggerated with a stiff bar.
Anyway....yeah...I kinda think "arms flush with knees" is just an accident of anthropometry (admittedly, I'm an outlier here with relatively long arms).

im one of the weird ones that pulls better when keeping hips high, ss style. it helps me keep my shoulders over the bar longer to avoid the classic hitching the bar up past the knees
