-which is 3/4" pipe with 2 reducer couplings and a 1/2" nipple in the middle. You could probably just buy a handle attachment made for lifting for a similar price.
IMPORTANT UPDATE:

The 1/2" nipple ripped in half today while rowing a pretty light weight. I exploded backwards and hit my head into the wall. I'm fine- but I felt like it was worth mentioning.

I hereby recommend a proper handle designed for this sort of thing. Or at least a smarter DIY approach than what I did.

I'm currently using an ez curl barl with a length of webbing attached to the center. I'm assuming it will hold as long as the stitching in the webbing holds - I inspect it once a week. Spud Inc seems to believe in webbing for this type of stuff.

Making a normal J-hook knurling-safe

#50

Post by OrderInChaos » Wed Oct 17, 2018 5:18 pm

Threadjacking, I guess. DIY seems appropriate for this task though. Wanted my cerakote AB training bar safe from metal-scuffing every time I rack it and it rolls back due to very slight tilt in garage floor. Fringesport doesn't make Sandwich cups for the model I bought (I think?!), but it would save quite a few bucks regardless or help those who got the normal J-cups get some use out of them with no knurling problems.

I overbought, have enough tape for probably 25 more J-hooks and enough plastic sheet for at least 10-12 more; going to help out a buddy with his non-sandwich hooks since I have so much to spare, but cost was still reasonable at around $30 total

Bought:
  • 3M VHB Heavy Duty Mounting Tape 5952, 0.5" width x 5yd length (1 Roll)
  • UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) Sheet, Opaque Black, Standard Tolerance, 1/8" Thickness, 12" Width, 24" Length
Tools used:
  • Standard Hand Saw
  • Some kind of vice/restraint
  • 60 grit sandpaper
Just measure the size of the contact metal on the J-cup, cut it, sand the rough strands of poly to your preferred smoothness, apply the double sided tape to the "down" face of the poly square, and apply a bunch of pressure to the square (I used a vice; clamps or even a channel lock plier are probably fine)

I let my empty bar sit in the hooks on the poly overnight to add a little more pressure but that seems unnecessary. I also did this to the safeties which had a gnarly little metal-UHMW plastic lip... same process, slightly different measurement.

@OrderInChaos was it your idea to use the industrial tape or did you see it somewhere? I wouldn’t know what to use to try to adhere polyethylene to metal.

I google'd something really close to //best double sided tape for mounting plastic to metal AND "squat"// (or AND "rack", or AND "Crossfit") I can't remember which... took me a bit to find for you just now but I found the thread below and figured for the J hooks application (where impact doesn't directly tear/shear the attached plastic off the way it would for skids) it'd be strong enough. Time will tell and I'll report back here but seems totally find thus far.

I use that stuff at work for mounting heavy ceramic tops onto casegoods. It should be just fine for this application. Just make sure to set it flush on your first try because you don’t get two chances :D

There's even some mildly reasonable pharaoh commentary there. asdf recently shared Justin Lascek's CF W Falls which was still on the CF boards. Avoiding the dogma you can find some really cool stuff still, very awesome they haven't purged (any? much?) of it.

Awesome to hear of that application and you totally called it with first time only time  . I may add a quick photo when I do the inner bare metal (nearest the upright, forming a right angle to the main original UMHW) on the safeties which I failed to think about having not benched for months until this week. I'll show the tape pattern I used that appears to be fairly effective. Gotta #ProtectDatCerakote.

I put UHMW strips on the spotter arms I made. I noted Rogue recommended 3M VHB tape to retrofit UHMW liners to their Infinity Spotter Arms so that’s what I used. I used an angle grinder to cut the strips/liners. I also wanted to chamfer the edges like the pros and really fretted over how to do it-send to a machine shop, buy a router table, use a dremel bit with a bearing, etc. In the end I just freehanded the chamferswith an angle grinder and they turned out great, in my opinion.

Made a couple of toaster-style plate racks for bumpers yesterday while the baby was napping. So now I don't have to go all the way to the back of the rack on the far side of the platform to grab bumpers (or more likely, grab the bumpers from leaning against the front of the rack, whatever it's sill almost 5 feet away).

Also, fun pic of rented miter saw from Home Depot in my car
