Re: Bourbon
Not bourbons, but Redemption Rye and Rittenhouse Rye BiB are also quite good if you like Ryes. Both are also under $30. I find Rittenhouse around here for around $23.

I never free pour. I always measure. I make 2 oz drinks. I think I have 4-6 on average. I sometimes loose count. I'm pretty sure that I had 5 Bulleit last night between 7 and 11:30. It might have been 4. I'm not sure. If it was 5, that would be 10 oz. There are roughly 25 oz in a 5th. So 2.5 nights. Hmmm.
I guess 10oz is around 660 calories. It would probably be better to get some of that as protein. To get that much alcohol, I'd probably have to drink 7 or 8 beers. That would be a shitload of calories, probably double. I don't think I could handle 1200 junk calories a day. Apparently, I can deal with 600 or so without much of an issue.
I'll make some adjustments. I'll at least try to bring that down to 4 for blood pressure reasons . . . . Maybe I'll do another dry January. Those are a pain.
I'm not sure if you're asking this seriously or rhetorically, and I'm also not sure why people are soft-pedaling the issue, and I hate to be a moralizing ass.
But, on the off-chance this is a serious question, the answer is yes, this is excessive. Guidelines for diagnosing alcohol use disorder vary a bit between sources, but if you're routinely downing 5+ drinks a night, you meet all of them. Any medical professional would tell you to cut back. A lot.

Actually the diagnosis questionnaires for AUD focus much more on behavioral effects than the volume consumed.PatrickDB wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2017 8:47 am I'm not sure if you're asking this seriously or rhetorically, and I'm also not sure why people are soft-pedaling the issue, and I hate to be a moralizing ass.

Even when I was going through a fifth over the course of 3 evenings I could "pass" any of those questionnaires with completely honest answers.
I quit because I know the physiological effects at that volume are contradictory to my goals.

It meets the definition of binge drinking, sorry. I maintain that any reasonable doctor confronted with that drinking pattern would suggest cutting back.

Re: Bourbon
Indeed. My doctor did say that I should cut back. He suggested that I should have children so I'd have reason to drink less. It was kind of a joke.
But he didn't suggest it because of any blood work.
When I had a bloodclot in 2014, my liver panel was a little wonky. I haven't seen any problems since. I'll get more blood work on my next visit to the GP.
Same here. I don't get hangovers. I've never missed work because of drinking. I don't engage in any risky behavior. I don't drink during the day. People aren't begging me to drink less. . . I do sometimes wish that I would drink less, but not because of how its effecting my life. It's not (I'm pretty sure, but I have some humility about self-knowledge of this sort. . . .) My main concern is my liver and BP. And I guess the extra calories are hiding my abs.Jay870 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2017 9:00 amActually the diagnosis questionnaires for AUD focus much more on behavioral effects than the volume consumed.PatrickDB wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2017 8:47 am I'm not sure if you're asking this seriously or rhetorically, and I'm also not sure why people are soft-pedaling the issue, and I hate to be a moralizing ass.

If I could sustain this level of drinking without any significant impact on my health, I would. I'm just not sure that I can. It's not clear to me that my BP is off due to drinking. It's been high since I was a sober college student. And I need some new bloodwork to test the liver.
Re: Bourbon
I picked up a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon today, it's good stuff. The higher rye content gives it a different flavor than the Buffalo Trace.

Picked up a bottle of Old Grand Dad BiB 100.
Really, really good for $25.

I did not like OGD114 last time I had it. I think I had it neat, and I should have watered it to 80 or so.

Re: Bourbon
Bought a bottle of Stagg Jr this week. Initial impression is that at 132 proof, its very hot. Watering down to 90-100 proof makes it very smooth and drinkable.

My first beer was a Bourbon Barrel Stout at some pizza place in Louisville. Good stuff.
