The only way it could be more perfect is if it came with a pair of those shorts.

Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
yeah, it says it "portable" ... that IS what its called...with the plywood base attached/included?
Also uses "ample space".
I don't know think they knew what words meant back then or something.
I mean, I could make that work .... for $99, if that's all I could spend.

Yeah, it's "portable" in that it breaks down into the 2 sides, the chin bar, and the base, vs a fully welded cage. I was surprised to see it still sitting there after a month, but it sounds like the equipment market at PIAS has crashed hard. He had pallets and pallets of plates, tons of bars/dumbbells, machines, etc. and said that nothing was selling for the last few weeks. I think the only use I'd have for it is as a chin station, but at 79" it's pretty short, too.

@murphyreedus, a rack like that would be okay for a patio rack or something. I imagine using it like a weaker version of Bud Jeffries.

Maybe I can put it in the backyard and have the wife put some flowerbeds around it. Art meets utility, or something, plus it'll be exposed to the elements for graceful aging.

Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
Yeah, I got problems. It did come with the original plywood base, but I'll make a new one since it's a little trashed. PIAS guy actually throw in 2 pairs of vintage York Olympic collars with it for the $99, so I think I did OK vs the price of a Rip rack.

The tabs at the end of the pins that keep them from falling out are interesting.

You just need to go on the SS forums and find a local acolyte who will give you $200+ for a real authentic man's rack that has already aged with its owner

I haven't tried installing the safeties at angles yet, so I can't confirm if it's as functional as the SS racks.

Do the Rip racks have those gussets at the base of the uprights?

I don’t think so.
While looking for a photo to confirm (I couldn’t find one), I stumbled upon this:

How did I miss this? For when you want to make your pull-up bar 48% less usable?

Yeah. Well, the whole thing looks phoned in. The 5 quart mixing bowl they got from Walmart isn’t even level.Skander wrote: ↑Sat May 29, 2021 7:10 amThey really phoned in that product photo. The SS pull down is ridiculously overpriced.

Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
I have been using a York isometric rack for over 40 years. It was the only commercially available rack at the time and continues to be used several days a week.
I use a vintage York 7’ standard 1” heat treated bar.
It is a perfect size for a small home gym. It’s mounted on a 36”X 48” X 1.5” plywood.
I use 5/8” bolts and washers as j hooks and added a lat pull down cable.
True old school lifting at its best!

Damn. 40+ years is a pretty decent run.
I'd say keep up the good work, but that doesn't seem pertinent here. : )

Whatever works for you, I suppose. That doesn't make it a good rack though, any more than continuing to drive a 1971 Ford Maverick suddenly makes it a good car. Just sayin'. Good to see someone still lifting for that many years.Dale wrote: ↑Sat May 29, 2021 6:22 pm I have been using a York isometric rack for over 40 years.
