Anyone else stoked for the latest iteration of Napoléon this autumn?

I don't think there's been a single Ridley Scott effort that I haven't enjoyed on some level - even Prometheus!

Prometheus is one of my favorite movies.

Stoked AF for Napoleon.

Agree with your assessment of Ridley Scott.

I initially liked Prometheus but I grow less fond with each viewing...

Covenant was dog shit.

Napoleon looks pretty good.

I only saw Prometheus twice.
And Covenant once, but loved it also.
That scene where David returns to the Architect’s homeworld. . .

New Mission Impossible? Yep. I mean, it's what you'd expect, but not in a bad way. Two and a half hours of action that never stops.

I guess much of the movie The Blind Side was a lie .....

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/381 ... m-proceeds

Michael Oher was never officially adopted;
and I guess he was wasn't 'dumb' (unintelligent) as the movie portrayed him.

This was well known when the movie came out. Hollywood turned it into a Sandra Bullock vehicle/white savior story. Oher was already a prominent football player identified by scouts when the Tuohy family entered his life. Oher had behavioral issues stemming from growing up a poor black kid in the South with no stable household (he might have been living on his own and homeless at one point?), and so forth.

While at 'Ole Miss one of the other football players made some unpleasant comments about his 'adopted' sister. Who is an attractive white woman and also went to 'Ole Miss. Oher became enraged and it took like half the team to restrain him from beating the shit out of the guy. Oher considered himself a part of the family. This is just really sad for him.

*The 'Ole Miss thing was also really shady. The Tuohy's were active alumni. The fact they 'adopted' this 300+ pound, NFL genetics left tackle when he was 18 and then 'guided' him to go to 'Ole Miss is suspicious.

The Tuohy family are disgusting. They used an 18-year old's desire to be loved and have family to manipulate Oher into signing a conservatorship. Whatever good they may have done is undone by their greedy and abhorrent behavior. The attorney, agent, the Tuohy's children, and everyone BUT Oher made money off the movie and other business deals. Fuck them. I hope the Tuohy's lose everything in court.

The above was pretty much my take as well. That said, the family’s counsel came out with a blistering statement late yesterday. That’s to be expected, but what’s notable is that he claims (1) to have the receipts; and (2) that Oher had multiple prior attorneys who were dissuaded by said receipts. There’s not going to be much room for debate - guy either has the receipts that he claims to have, or he doesn’t. We’ll see.

FWIW he got a 19 on his Wonderlic which is pretty average. IIRC Wonderlic is g loaded, but the format is biased for speed vs a traditional IQ test.

The Wonderlic is based on a very simplistic and wrong concept of IQ (it is from the 1930's). It really doesn't measure much of anything other than working memory capacity. And it is arguable how well it does that. It does not measure fluid intelligence at all. Its format prioritizes speed to its detriment meaning its measure of crystallized intelligence questionable. It is basically hot garbage.

fluid intelligence - the ability to perceive relationships independent of previous specific practice or instruction concerning those relationships.
crystal intelligence - ability to use knowledge and information previously learned over the years

Is there a test of general intelligence that you do believe is valid?

No.

From what I have read IQ tests simply confirm the known. In other words, people with high IQ as evidenced by their intellectual accomplishments do well on them. Or people with low IQs (mentally disabled) perform poorly. But they almost have no predictive ability when applied to the general population.

From my semi-deep dive into this a few years ago: the reasons for this are multi-faceted. Namely human cognitive ability is not a single thing. But multiple 'systems' working together. And we aren't really sure about the various 'systems'. Or really how the brain works anyway. The tests tend to focus on problem solving in an academic way. No shit Einstein is going to perform well in analytical thinking. He's had 2 decades of academic training. Is Einstein truly better at problem solving? Put Einstein in a wood working shop and have him build a bird house in 30 minutes. How'd he do? So it is tough to separate what is simply training versus 'raw' intelligence/capability. Which IQ is meant to measure 'raw' brain power. But it doesn't. And IQ as measured by these tests can be trained to a large degree.

A 50-year old minimum wage worker and they will perform poorly. Grab a 50-year old college professor and they will perform well. Is it raw brain power that separates the two? Or a lifetime of socio-economic factors?

Watched a movie called 'Nice Guys' on Netflix. Buddy detective movie set in 70s LA. By the writer of Lethal Weapon 1 and it kind of shows.

Perfect streaming fare. Very funny and well acted but kind of tonally inconsistent and nonsensically plotted.
