Re: Onwards with tectonic swiftness.
Well !%$£%%@ today, also tomorrow and up to the forseeable future. The gym has been revamped and utterly ruined.
The new racks and platforms that we were promised have turned up along with new bars. The racks are some stupid design with shlves at the back for idiots to put silly toys on. I had to go to the desk to ask where the safeties were, they either haven't arrived or there won't be any. The owner did joyfully show me the dedicated bench that's taking up a chunk of the deadlift area. It's competition standard. So what. Competition standards dictate the length and height of the thing, not the quality.
I squatted within limits and outside the rack, high bar, so I could dump it on passers by. The new bars feel cheap, dead and thin. The J hooks are just bent angles lined with plastic that is already wearing out. The racks feel narrower than the old ones and they shake like crazy when I rerack my tiny weights.
To Bench, Ihave to either carry tri grips around or use bumpers. I feel sorry for all competitive power lifters if they have to lift on crap like this. Re racking shakes the uprights around. They aren't well fixed anyway. There are safeties, but the adjustment means the slghtest tilt will hit the. Less hand space than the old racks.
And the price is going up, again. £25 was pretty good, £30 was sort of okay, £35... I could ditch it.
All in all I think it may be time to quit. I could stick it out and push my lifts up to 2 plates (got that) 3 plates (maybe) 4 plates (I was nearly there before lockdown. Then I ask myself, "Do I care?" I'm starting to think I don't.
I trained through the first lockdown doing a bunch of daft crap and didn't lose much strength. I readapted to barbell lifts pretty quickly. Second time around I got pissed of and hadn't trained in months when I went back.
Options:
Jogging and yoga.
Pro better company, better scenery
Con, yoga classes actually cost more, but I needn;t attend every week
Home workouts:
Pro: no irritating oiks and nitwits
Con: less space, can't do deadlifts
Rent a space and get some kit:
Pro get aluddite gym with just bar, plates, stands and some kind of safeties
Con: expensive, would have to share it to keep costs down
Anyway, this may be my last couple of weeks at the gym.

Re: Onwards with tectonic swiftness.
With one bound Jack was (almost) free. Quick internet search found that a gym I had rejected before has two Hammer power racks now and (drum roll) has a reduced rate for over 55s. Popped round and said I'd arrange a free session on Monday. I'd intended to use up my membership at the old place, but...
Workmen were in, putting the finishing touches to the new racks. How often have you thought "After my squats and bench, what I really need is a set of cable crossovers, but the cable machine is nearly ten feet away ! Oh dash it all, I'll never make it"
Fear not. The genius of modern man has filled in all the silly spaces at the side of a squat rack, which lesser minds wold have used for safety bars, with weight stacks and pulleys. The attachment points for equipment are on the front uprights, thus obscuring the view of anyone foolish enough to squat there. And so, instead of two pieces of equipment that do their job well, we have one that does its job badly. The wobbly nature of the rack is because it is not a rack, it is a cable station with a space for J hooks. The narrow spacing of the uprights mean that the cables are at a narrow angle and crossovers will be done with little to no gain.
The competition standard bench is detestable. The uprights wobble in their sockets and the bar rolls back in the supports and has to be repositioned before each lift off. When the bar is racked, any decent weight make the whole thing tilt and the bench shakes the lifter. The new bars quiver when struck. I know whippy bars are supposed to have their uses, but when they bounce around in the hooks as if they want to jump out, it's alarming.
So Front squat in the old set up in the deadlift area, no need for safeties. 60x3 70x2 80x1x2 85x1 87.5x1
Bench w/u 60x3 70x2 80x1x2 87.5x1 95x1 97.5x0 Damn it! It's oddly hard to unrack in the new set up. the bar wants to travel the wrong way. I never had this with the old racks.
Deadlift w/u 155x1 left it there, I'd guess 95%.
Pin bench: couldn't set the safeties high enough. 60x3 70x3 80x3 90x0
Leg extension: had to move the 'personal trainer' who is definitley the dick head I used to work opposite at another gym. For some reason he has a weak fatty doing planks across the width of the machine room while he sat on the leg extension machine. He admitted the was not using it and then took an ungodly amount of time removing all his junk from the area. I pointedly cleaned the seat.

Damn, for got Monday SQ w/u 80x5 72.5x5 BN w/u 75x5 67.5x5 DL w/u 120x5 107.5x5 some other stuff
Today
LBBS w/u 90x5 80x5 BN w/u 75x5 67.5x5 60x5x5 DL w/u 120x5 107.5x5 Power clean 60x3x5

Slotted in another workout.
Press w/u 52.5x5 47.5x5
LBBS w/u 90x5 80x5
BN w/u 75x5 67.5x5
Started warming up the deadlift then read the sign about no heavy deadlifts or putting weights down hard. To be fair, there are hotel room that have been built above gym.

Re: Onwards with tectonic swiftness.
An odd mixture of the sublime and the ridiculous.
A young lady was doing vertical kickbacks on the smith machine. I couldn't even do that movment unloaded, possibly not even asisited, she was loading it. By contrast two characters provided entertainment. One has a beard for personality. He put on a dip belt and used it for support while doing sort of RDLs with light weight. The other appears to be new. much gear, elbow wraps, straps, rubbish brand belt, possible compression shirt. He was doing rack pulls with straps and an alternate grip. I suppose it's an achievement to get straps tight with an alternate grip. Also rack pulling three plates, with all that gear on... he went on to do some questionable push presses.
Anyway
