@alek @EricK @JFick

I’m probably just being dramatic… but;

My left knee has waxed and waned with generic patellofemoral pain for years. Not a huge deal. Just a pretty annoying medium deal.

The right knee, however, has had a clicking “catch” and “give” with deep knee flexion. Historically, I can squat to proper depth but I have to be careful going any deeper.

The catch and give would rarely hurt, but it always felt weird and unstable, so I avoided it. During a recent Olympic lifting session, I decided to ignore the feeling (since it didn’t usually hurt) and the next day it hurt really bad. Over the course of a few weeks, that pain has lessened, but the catch and give is occurring at all knee angles and there’s an audible clunk with every step I take.

I’m sure it’s not totally detached or anything, but that clearly mechanical catch and give makes me think there’s a mild tear and/or loose joint body.

I’ll ask a trusted ortho doc next week at work before making any official appointment/imaging.

bummer dude.

an audible clunk and thud is typical of, yes, either a torn meniscus or some stretched out ligaments that are letting the femur slip over the meniscus. much more probably it's the former in a knee vs a shoulder say. let's see what the doc says, could justify another MRI in your near future. best of luck!

3/4/22

CF Open 22.2

Ascending ladder of 225# deadlifts and bar facing burpees, up to 10 and 10, then back down the ladder. 10:00 time cap.

-time capped with 127 reps (just shy of completing 11 rounds)

Musings: This was a fun one for me since I deadlift more than any of the other gym “athletes.” So 225 was EZPZ, and the workout was all lungs. I paced much better compared to the first workout.

3/5/22

Bodyweight 190#. I’ve eaten pizza for 3 different meals in the past 2 days, with cereal, donuts, or ice cream for dessert each time. Homemade blueberry pancakes with real syrup for breakfast this morning @that’ll do pig

Bench 225x5x8

Chins BW+53x5x6, 1x8

Assault Bike x15:
1:00 work
1:00 rest
-65-66 rpm
-16.02 Cal/work minute
(Last round @72 rpm)

Face pulls
Cable curls
Tricep pushdowns

Later Musings: The dude at the cigar shop remarked that I “obviously lift” and asked how much I deadlift. Feelsgoodman

It takes a discerning eye to ask something besides, "How much you bench?" It always makes me smile on the rare occasion that it happens (to me, that is).

Agreed. This guy said he was on his way to 385 from 365 and it was a cool and simple interaction.

On the other hand, I assume people are often lying when they talk about how much they bench, so anyone asking about it is either about to lie or assume I’m lying. Which is a pointless and annoying interaction.

I like to ask people what type of training they’re pursuing; bodybuilding, powerlifting, etc. Then we can talk about big picture topics and programming which is usually authentic and interesting.

3/7/22

Bodyweight 189#

Bench 315x1,
285x5x3

Squat 325x5x3
Let’s play “Which knee will give me the most trouble today?”

Landmine Row +125x3x15

Assault Bike x5:
4:00 work
1:00 rest
-58-60 rpm
-12.08 Cal/work minute

That interval scheme is ruff stuff. Very tempting to let off the gas.

3/11/22

CF Open 22.3

12:00 Time Cap:
21 pullups
42 double unders
21 thrusters (95#)
18 chest-to-bars
36 double unders
18 thrusters (115#)
15 bar muscle-ups
30 double unders
15 thrusters (135#)

I made it to 5 muscle ups.

Musings: I'm able to do (but not great at) double unders, which separated me from some of the better cardio people who suck at them. But the ability to do chest-to-bars and muscle-ups was a huge separator. I ended up finishing The Open in second place for my box. The owner (first place) absolutely destroyed me in all 3 workouts, but to be faaaaiiir he advances to the quarterfinals every year (top 10%). Also, that gym is a pretty small pond, so it's not a huge deal to beat the other members, but it's still #winning.

Thank man. I set out 6 months ago to pwn those newbs and accomplished my goal.

For reference though, it looks like I’ll finish in the 59th percentile worldwide, so I’d be middle of pack in a bigger/more competitive gym. Nowhere to go but up.

austin 3:16/22

Been sleeping like crap since stupid DST. Got out work earlier today so I guzzled a big cup of coffee and headed to the gym.

Bench 275x2
295x2
325x1 @EZPZ
275x7x2 @speedy

Squat 375x1. This rep felt great. Maybe not squatting for 2 weeks helped my knees a little?

265x4x6. Supposed to get a lot more reps than this, but my hamstring started cramping up pretty hard. Maybe not squatting for 2 weeks hurt my hammies a little?

Assault Bike
15:00
-60 rpm
-13.21 Cal/work minute
Sent it hard on this. After doing a few metcons lately (where you’re left gasping for air at the end), I realized I haven’t been pushing hard enough on the bike. Hit my 10:00 pace for 15:00 and collapsed off the bike into a sweaty heap afterward.

Now I’m super sleepy and might just try to take a nap. For your recovery.
