I set my google-date-range to before this accident and nothing comes up.....
Had he simply used the correct length spotter straps he would have walked away from that. The refusal of powerlifters to embrace safeties is amazing to me. My gym has a very nice dedicated bench setup with safeties, half the time I use it someone has lowered them to the level of the bench, in other words they are just high enough to make the tip and plate dump more difficult.
Re: the walkout, at least one federation requires it for a squat to be considered raw. The mono gets used because they are readily available with hydraulic height adjustment, which is nice to have if the 700 lb squatter is taller than the 650 lb squatter.

What went wrong on the descent? It happens so fast I can't tell on my phone. Does he lose balance somehow or did some minor injury occur that caused him to fail?

Looked to me like his knee gave out. I thought I heard that both his legs/ knees are broken. He has to has have a bunch of surgery and learn how to walk again :cry:

It looks like his right knee is tracking forward and in before he starts to fall. After watching again I think he tore something in his right knee because he put the knee in valgus, then fell and damaged the other knee too. I will revise my earlier opinion, safeties probably would have saved only his left knee.

The set before this was a massive amount of weight, for like 6 reps or something, done to rpe 10.5..."a full 5 seconds" like how some people like you to fail.





Not a fan of stopping short like that...seems like that where the worst leverage is / most strain is at.

Kinda like partial squats stopping just above parallel...right at the stick point.

Welp, my kids will forever have this burned into their brains the same way Sid Vicious's leg was burned into mine...

The two lucha guys are so fun to watch and I feel so bad for the guy because that spot has been done so many times...

just realized watching this on the responses .... I think he has some shitty incline bench he is using, and there is a 2nd olympic barbell on the very last set of rack hook supporting the bench pad.

Maybe that saved him to some extent, as the plates are interfering with the 2nd bar sleeve (out of camera frame).

but he may be fighting it toward the end, like he's gonna pinched between two giant chop sticks.

You really need to practice failing if you're going to bench or squat alone, IMO. Doesn't matter if it involves safeties, not using collars, or simply dumping the bar off of your back if your squat position allows for it. First thing I do every time I squat or bench in a new rack.

Maybe get some internet-attention from your mistake? (lemonade from sour lemons)....probably.

Also possibly scared some kids into not benching alone, or as grain&gains said, learn the details of how to fail a bench, safety use, uncollar, etc

Maybe saved a future life.

I think what happened, he either blew a hammy or achillies, and was limping it in, and then fucken hyper'd his knee.

He may of wound up damaging both legs one way or another, or, got himself two or three (ankle looked bad too) on the same leg.

fucken spikes grab the track hard bro


EDIT:

At my kid's last track meet, there was a total of 5 crashes on the track at the finish line. And only ONE other (6th) crash due to hurdles.

Of the five crashes at the finish, 3 were lean-for-the-tape/win maneuvers gone awry. 2 were weird exhaustion and trying to re-accelerate at the last second......one guy was winning his heat by 2 meters and the wheels-came-off-his-wagon with about 5meters to go

He might actually have been able to dump that without a spotter. And it is a minor hassle, but well worth it, to set up straps for a monolift
