  • So I was getting sick, ended up sick as a dog. I blew off Friday and Saturday sessions last week, and also missed Tuesday this week. Back at it since Wednesday and it feels good.

Second last set of deadlifts yesterday and I felt a small pop in the area where I had the bulged disk...sure enough, the sharp pain followed and that's all she wrote. Im so annoyed! sub-max, nothing out of the ordinary but I guess things needed more time? ugh. There goes the planning for this year, back to the drawing board now, I'll still compete but I'll do so Bench Only.

Thanks @Wilhelm, @slowmotion, it is what it is. Although I'm majorly dissapointed, and super bummed out, I've processed most of it and now I'm simply executing a different plan.

I have my nose stuck in Dr McGill's books right now, the man's supposed to be the back whisperer and I'll be using his guidance to work through and rehab my back. It's looking like the process will be a lot lengthier, and markedly different, than my physio led me to believe when I was injured last year. I'm not in any real hurry, and the name of the game is quality of life in the long-term, which means I can't afford to do things half-assed or try to rush them...powerlifting ain't paying no bills.

Training-wise, I've already sat down and drawn up a bench specialisation program which I'm looking forward to getting stuck into. I'm actually quite excited about it, it's going to be interesting :D

I've resigned myself to only benching while I rehab, looking at roughly 3-6 months before I squat and deadlift again and even longer before doing so with any worthwhile weight. What's a man to do in the mean time, Bench...a lot, and experiment.
  • Turned my 4 day bench program into a Bench every day program. It's not as crazy as it sounds though, I took the volume planned over 4 days and re-jigged it over 7 days instead....you could say this is my very owne Norwegian strength training experiment.
  • I'm very curious to see how this goes, not being in a rush for anything does have it's advantages.
  • I miss muh squats and deadlifts! :(

I haven't had a bulged disc in 4 years, but I used to get them all the time before I started training (putting toddlers into car seats in the back of a convertible). I think this latest one was just a facet joint, I didn't get much radiating pain, but it was more that it happened with good form, on a sub Max deadlift, completely out of no where

Oh wow, my issue used to be really bad ankles from my soccer days. I was in pain simply standing up, for year, strength training fixed it within 9 months. That's good to hear, just means you take it easy and you'll be right as rain in no time. My issue ios the same bulged disk from last year, I don't think I gave it enough time to heal.
