Deadlift help on the MM

#1

Post by lehman906 » Mon Jun 25, 2018 3:19 pm

I’m running the Montana Method modified for Strongman. It’s going really well, especially for my Log Press, but my Deadlift has been steadily declining. Today I pulled 92% (460) for 1, which should have been @8.5-9, but was a definite shaking @10. I’m not sure what to do. Log Press is definitely my priority, and being a full body movement itself, I’m hesitant to not have it as the first movement each day. Here’s a quick overview of how I have it set up. A more detailed version is in my log viewtopic.php?t=1713

Mon:strength
Log Jerk
DL
CGBP

Wed:Hypertrophy
Log Push Press
Squat/SSB Squat (alt weeks)
Upper back

Thur: At home-I have a barbell, prowler, and farmers
Press
Light Farmers. Maybe heavier if I have my kids ride on them.

Sat: Power
Log
Squat
Tire flip or SGDL

I’m not sure what to do. Do I….
A) Swap DL to Wed and Squat to Monday? Do they have to be all strength on strength day, or is it only important that the exercise vary throughout the week, whichever day they’re on?
B) Replace Power Squat with DL and put either SGDL or Squat on Monday?
C) Chill out with all the pulling (DLx2, Farmers, tires, and even Log a little)
D) Take a low-stress week and stop catastrophizing before Austin gives you a disappointed-Dad look?

Just add a conventional deadlift session. Forget the SGDLs.

Make it hypertrophy-ish (72-77%-ish) with a heavy single (@7ish).

I really like something that forum member, @Mugaaz does. He does the heavy single after an initial workset. So your session might look like:

warmup to
4@72%
1@7-8
4 or 5 more sets of 4@72%

^ scale up volume if necessary

I’m not sure I understand. That’s pretty much what I’m doing on Monday isn’t it? 1@90%, 4x5 at 75-80%? Are you saying to do the lighter version of that on Sat and forget the Monday one or to do both?

I think you should have

a) a light session:(72-77ish) with a heavy single &
b) a heavier session with singles and doubles around 80-87ish

Ahhh, gotcha. Thanks, I’ll make the adjustments. And I’ll try the “Mugaaz Method” for the volume sets. I saw Jordan say something about doing that, too.

I appreciate all the help, and a 250 log is gonna fall by the end of the summer.

The singles just go so much smoother for me if I do them after the first workset. I have no explanation for it, could be all mental. Makes it so when I pull the heavy single my mind doesn't go "holy shit really?!", then makes the 2nd workset feel light in comparison.

I get that a lot, especially with the log press. I almost think it’s more about finding the groove than anything else. I’ll try it out on the DL. Right now I’m scribbling and scratching out trying to figure out how to all this DL-ing plus farmers and tire flip because I suck at the tire way more than I should. I *think* I’ve got it figured out. Maybe.

That's what periodization is all about. I would de-emphasize the competitive movements until 12 weeks out from competition.

Not necessarily with all movements(or at least that I haven't noticed) but for my Bench, they feel easier the more sets I do. Like the first set of 5 feels heavy as fuck, but by the 7th it's just flying up.

FWIW, bench often gets easier for me as I go. I think it's a technique and confidence thing (I lower faster knowing I can easily handle the weight and lowering faster uses less energy). Deadlifts on the other hand tend to get harder for me, as they use a lot of energy, even if there's a bit of improving technique.

This is week 12. I used to mostly powerlift until mid-summer and then start working in the lifts, and it didn’t work as I’d hoped. I just couldn’t translate any strength gains into practice. Of course, my programming was, looking back, pretty sub-optimal, and I was only hitting log once a week and alternating farmers and tire.

This year I didn’t want to get out of practice, especially since the movements are so technique dependent, so I tried to work them in as soon as I could.

Back when I read stuff there more often, someone at EFS (Clint Darden?) recommended comp movements one day a week on its own day, I think pressing 3/week (2 log/overhead, 1 bench), deadlifting 2x, squatting once.

Event Day on Saturday has been sort of the traditional model for a long time and I think it can work well with proper volume and intensity. The crew I was in with were kind of old school “bleed in the dojo” types that would basically do a mock meet every Saturday for 4 hours, which beat the shit out of me. Otherwise, yeah, the frequency seems pretty much like what @Hanley was suggesting. DL on Wed/Sat, Farmers on Thur, and Tire on Sat. Log MWS.

I do Farmers at my house, and tire and log at the gym.

So for the heavier session, something like 1@85-87% and 3 sets of 2@80%?

Sure. I'd probably bump the volume a bit.

Mix it up. Ramping heavy singles, pyramid singles etc
