Venezuela mess
Some parallels to the USA here? or no?
It "checks a lot of the boxes" ....

Yes, assuming the election was in fact won by the opposition (my sense is this is obvious to people knowledgeable about the matter but idk), then that is indeed parallel to what Trump tried to do and would presumably be willing to try again.

Re: Venezuela mess
Does your assumption inherently include as an element that Trump actually did win in 2020? Because if it doesn't there's no parallel with Venezuela at all. But if you believe that Trump actually won in 2020, well..., that's another thing to argue about entirely.

I was referring to Maduro declaring himself winner after in fact losing as parallel to what Trump tried to do.
Does the analogy not work?

My apologies, I misunderstood. No, your analogy works perfectly and I'm a moron.dw wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 5:17 pmomaniphil wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 4:56 pmDoes your assumption inherently include as an element that Trump actually did win in 2020? Eh it wasn't a perfect fit in the first place.

Re: Venezuela mess
Nope. Not even close. Venezuela hasn't run a real election since Hugo Chavez won the first time, this is just the first time in a long time an actual opposition name was put out as an option. Maduro declared in advance that he was going to win because the military backs him and he says so - effectively. The situation is night and day different. Venezuelans have been streaming out of the country for a long time now, to the extent that they can freely enter certain ally countries that are in only marginally better economic shape but it is literally illegal to take any of them to the border that is on the way to the US. Not a joke there. You take a Venezuelan to the border to try and go North and get caught they take the vehicle, apply a fine, and put you in jail. Trump WISHES he was at the level of Maduro and his comrade leaders within that block.
